Dear Adèle, I Apologize

Dear Adèle,

When you made your debut into Doll World, I shied away from adding you to my collection based on your appearance alone. Your expression was similar to that of the mean girls I encountered back in the days of my youth who were mean to others to conceal their own insecurities. Your stern gaze through almond-shaped eyes seemed to pierce like a knife.  I sensed a defensive aura and believed you might cause serious bodily harm if anyone looked at you too hard or made the slightest move to disturb your sense of well-being. Even your name sounded fierce to me: Adèle Makéda. Girl, I just knew you carried a fully-loaded "piece" at all times and were not afraid to use it. Your temper could escalate from 0 to 60 without provocation, I thought. You were just too mean and I did not want you near me.  These preconceived irrational assumptions existed in my mind for nearly a decade and are the reasons I neglected to add you to my collection.

Things changed last year. I gave you a second glance. I noticed how throughout the years your "disposition" gradually softened. What I had originally perceived as ruthlessness was actually self-confidence and total autonomy. I realize now that you are your own woman, not defined by the standards of others. You are a leader. The others follow and want to emulate you. Many are often envious of your style, your class, your intelligence, your grace. Your unapologetic confidence frightens them. They want to be you.  I wanted you in my collection.

Because your secondary market price is often high, it took a full year for me to find you at a price I was willing to pay.  Shortly afterward, I found another.

Something Sexy Adèle, 2005, was purchased from D7Ana at a price I could not refuse.
Now that I own two, I am delighted I gave you a second chance and took the time to recognize the depth of your total doll being. Adèle, I am very sorry for dismissing you for so many years.

I hope, if you care, that you will find it in your “heart” to forgive my brash oversight.

Sincerely,

dbg

PS  I must also apologize on behalf of the man God created for me.  When he first noticed your Urban Antoinette version, he asked, "Who's the Cher doll?"  "Cher doll? I don't have a Cher doll."  I asked/stated.   He pointed you out as you stood gracefully on my desk.  I replied, "That's not Cher. Her name's Adèle."  Finally, he said, "Well, she's dressed like Cher."

Please forgive him, too.

  1. Urban Antoinette Adele looks kind of like a dominatrix in the bustier, fishnet tights and boots. Something sexy Adele seems softer and more approachable. I have read a lot of raves about Adele on various blogs so congratulations on adding her to your collection!

  2. Thanks for the congrats, Limbe Dolls.

Urban Antoinette Adele is still a little rough-looking around the edges. I'm not at all crazy about her fashion*. It was her removable Afro wig that drew me to her. You know me and my crave for texture as opposed to bone-straight hair.

Something Sexy's price was her appeal. I'll probably stop with these two as I'm not one to have multiple dolls with the same face sculpt in my collection (except for the occasional accidental twin purchase).

*I just thought of a fashion change that might work for UAA.

  3. Lol, gotta love the PS. :)

It's amazing how much some dolls "tell" us with just their faces, isn't it.

  4. Yes, Alrunia... some sculpts speak volumes.

That Cher statement was pretty comical.

  5. LOL at the Cher comment.

Thanks for the link, DBG! Glad you like having the SS Adele - just surprised you still have her in hot pants ;-D

  6. I guess I could write a similar letter. I never really took to Adele in the past. I have the Luminescence doll, but I really haven't done much with her. There are some new ones that I find very appealing, but not enough to buy one.

Your husband may need to have his eyes checked. Or is that proof that men rarely look at faces? All he saw was an outfit. How sad.

  7. D7ana - I rarely redress Integrity Dolls but I do have an outfit in mind for UAA.

Vanessa -- Too funny about the eyes examined suggestion. Men.

I think the seller of the Adele Luminescence doll on eBay needs his/her eyes examined, too. That does looks nothing like Beyonce, but I guess people will say anything to make a sell.

  8. DBG..you have me cracking up. My Mr. is getting better with his identification skills. He can now discern between Babs, FR, & clones. Adele is his favorite FR lady. I guess I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum I've loved Ms Makeda from the start. Glad to see you came over to the dark side..LOL

  9. I didn't even notice that he/she had compared her to Beyonce. There is absolutely no resemblance. Too funny. His price is the best available on ebay at the moment.

  10. Dollz4moi - Your Ms. is good. I can see why a male would love Adele. She has alluring sex appeal.

Vanessa - The eBay seller does have a great price for Adele Luminescence. It's a good thing I'm not in doll-buying mode. I would have snapped her up.

  11. I believe these days any AA doll w/blonde hair is called a Beyonce look alike..LOL. That's really a shame since the majority look nothing like her :o/

  12. I agree, Dollz4Moi. Beyonce's complexion/hair color combination probably inspired Barbie Basics Model 08's coloring. Beyonce is probably the reason Model 08 has had such a long life in the line while the other dark skinned dolls have disappeared.

  13. Now I have to admit that Model 8 does look like Beyonce to me. I don't have that doll, but I will get her when the 2.5 dolls come out.
