Who Is That Supposed to be, Diana Ross?

All-Natural Lizette stood on my desk after having had her new silver shoes placed on her feet.  These had been ordered to match the silver sequined dress won in an Ellowyne Wilde group giftaway.  The dress for the giftaway was donated by Denise of Denidolldesigns.

Tennis bracelet is composed of two crystal-encrusted toe rings.  I normally use these as necklaces for playscale dolls.  At the suggestion of Son of Ellis, I now know they can also be used as bracelets for 16-inch and taller dolls.

To coordinate with her new dress, in addition to new shoes, new earrings, and a "tennis" bracelet were added.  These accessories had been purchased separately with the shoes finally arriving from Hong Kong.

Lizette's Tonner-provided Afro is nice, but an upgrade was desired.

An Afro puff wig serves as her Afro.  It was purchased in a package of two from a beauty supply store.  The puff has an adjustable drawstring which allows for a snug fit on her head.   The excess string is tucked underneath in back.

Wearing her new dress and accessories, Lizette was all set for her photo shoot, waiting patiently on my desk, when my daughter entered the doll room.

All-Natural Lizette wearing Afro (puff) wig, slate gray drop earrings, silver sequined dress, "tennis" bracelet, and platform silver heels.

As I sat at my desk viewing an image of Patricia, Daughter asked, "Who is that supposed to be, Diana Ross?"  Frowning, because I thought she was referring to Patricia (who actually reminds me of Donna Summer), I asked, "How is that supposed to be Diana Ross?"  She gave me a blank stare.  I turned back to my monitor when Lizette caught my attention.  I then said, "Oh, you mean her.  No she's... [and I began to explain]"  By this time, Daughter had lost all interest.  Not a doll person, she retreated to the den with the other sports enthusiasts who were watching basketball.  I am sure she was thinking, "My mama is weird."

It is comforting to know there are others who understand the measures taken to enjoy dolls and that using gender pronouns to refer to them is completely acceptable.

  1. Lizette looks cute. I could see how your daughter might think she was meant to be Diana Ross although like you, I wouldn't have made that connection with the doll alone. (The silvery mini looks reminiscent of a Supremes' fashion.)

I thought everyone referred to dolls by the doll's gender. He for boys; she for girls. It only for when you can't tell.

    1. I agree... it's the dress that probably caught my daughter's attention, D7ana. That coupled with the hair might give someone the impression that Lizette is shadowing Diana Ross. This isn't the first time my daughter mistook one of my dolls for someone. Once I had a white Barbie with big hair (a failed attempt at an Afro for the doll) that my daughter thought was her grandmother (my mother). My mother's hair was honey blonde back in the day when people wore big hair.

    1. Thanks, GG. Of course I could have trimmed the Afro puff, but that would have defeated my purpose of the bigger the better.

  3. She is rocking that fro and I really like the idea of using toe rings for necklaces and bracelets.

    1. Thanks, Muff. I'm always checking out the toe rings when I go to the local beauty supply stores. To be honest, I visit these stores more for my dolls (for jewelry) more than I do for myself. Wal-Mart used to have a nice stock of toe rings -- four or five on a card for around $4. I haven't seen a nice selection there in quite some time.

  4. She looks so adorable Debbie! That is a great outfit and great hair. LOL at the interaction with your daughter. I can only talk about dolls for a couple of sentences with the people in my life before the blank expression washes over their faces and I realize that I'm not being heard. My husband can tolerate me more than most, but even he has his limits.

    1. I usually keep my doll talk to a minimum when I interact with non-collectors, Roxanne. They just don't get it and I don't have the time nor inclination to help them get it. My husband (because he has developed tolerance) and mother (who has begun to like babies and large dolls) are the only people in my immediate life who get it. The dolls my mother "borrowed" to decorate for Christmas over three years ago are still at her house. She dresses them in Christmas clothes for that time of year. After Valentine's Day, she dresses them in pastel colors.

    1. Go Brini, Go Brini! Rock that puff. I did all over Nubian twists last night and just took them down. A lot of trouble for what my hair usually looks like. I think I'll save my hands or do like I did in high school if I want the more uniform curl look -- wash and roll it on rod rollers and finger comb it.

    1. Vanessa -- you know it's sad when your dolls dress better than you because mine certainly do.
