Mother's Day Epiphany

Treasure by FayZah Spanos

The thought occurred to me a few days before Mother's Day that I should give Treasure by FayZah Spanos to my mother as part of her Mother's Day gift this year.   The poor doll has been on eBay attempting to find a new home for the past several weeks without success.  Before the last auction ended, I decided if it ended without bids, I would give Treasure to my mother.

This 24-inch vinyl doll with heavily stuffed cloth body has been part of my collection since her 1996 release.  Her artist used to be one of my all-time favorites.  I was a fan of life-size baby dolls at the time and those were Spanos' specialty.

Treasure's dark brown hair is braided in cornrows.  She has brown stationary eyes with applied eyelashes and puckered "kissing" lips.  Treasure wears a peach and ivory dress with golden grapes and ivory flowers on bodice, ivory satin panties, and gold ribbon headband of ivory flowers and gold grapes.

Treasure has bent baby legs with lots of fat rolls.

Some time ago when my mother asked me to bring additional large dolls to her house, she probably had standing dolls in mind, but Treasure will have to do for now.  So it is bye-bye from me to you, Treasure, and hello to you from Grandmother.

Her reaction upon removing Treasure from the gift bag was:  Oh Debbie, is this for me?  She's beautiful!  She sat her on the back of her sofa and said, "No one better touch her."  I told her she might want to put her in her bedroom.

Happy Mother's Day, everyone!

Even though Spanos left the world of doll making several years ago, a fan page devoted to the artist and her dolls remains online and includes an About the Artist page here.

  3. Treasure is such a pretty doll! It is clear how she was given that name. I love my Fayzah dolls. They take up a lot of space, but their little faces makes me smile every time I go into the space where they are.

Happy Mothers Day to you and your Mom.

    1. Thank you GG! This one was one of my favorites by FayZah. The most favorite is Cherry Dumpling. She is the only FayZah doll that remains in the collection. I sold the others.

  5. What a lovely doll. The way her arms are open it's like she's just waiting to be picked up.

    1. Thank you, Muff. Fayzah was good at capturing babies' personalities. My only problem with some of her dolls is that the hairdos were often over the top, but that is not the case with Treasure. I can see a baby wearing cornrows.

    1. Thanks, Shasha! Now when I look at these pictures, I say the same thing (she's beautiful) and realize why she touched my heart enough to purchase her at full retail way back in the day. The good thing is she is still in the family... just not here, taking up space. :-)
