May she continue to live forever in the hearts and minds of those who loved her and read her publications.

dbgBlack Doll Enthusiasthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07534871309015210903noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6047557606653771556.post-9111354106051830552022-09-21T09:42:57.766-05:002022-09-21T09:42:57.766-05:00My mother's maiden name was "Doll." ...My mother's maiden name was "Doll." She was officially named Ruth Ursula Ann Doll (RUA Doll) by my grandfather, who had a wicked sense of humor. When she was very, very little, her hair was put up in braids and her brother Mark, 11 years older, said "Why, she looks just like one of those Topsy dolls!" and the nickname stuck. From then on, she was known as Topsy Doll, even though she was a white child.

Mom never used the "Ursula" part of her name, preferring to be known formally as Ruth Ann when she thought Topsy sounded too childish. Eventually the mother of 11 and a published author, she nonetheless is known to everyone as Topsy Gregory. Topsy would have been 106 this past August. RIP, Topsy; you certainly earned it!Bridget Gregory McElreathnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6047557606653771556.post-59051035630015072812020-06-30T10:33:18.334-05:002020-06-30T10:33:18.334-05:00You are welcome Meighan. But I think I will call her Jill, after the famous society. she has that charming worn paint spot on the back of her hed from little mother having layed her down to sleep. other than needing some gentle cleaning, she is in lovely shape. I will send a photo if you tell me how. She needs one wee stocking replaced, and I suppose some little white shoes. Thank you for this informative post. Do you have anything on your site outlinin...Hello,

Do you have anything on your site outlining the history of the Topsy-Turvy Rag Doll? For the benefit of those who are unaware, this doll depicts a black doll with a full, long skirt and when you flip over the skirt, there's a completely different white doll underneath.

I'm not certain whether I have all my facts straight and would like to learn more about this doll. It is my understanding that these were originally hand-made at home by black families and specifically designed so little girls could play with their favorite doll without "offending" white folks...They could quickly flip over the skirt when someone white came into the room. What immediately (and sadly) comes to mind is the damage to a child's psyche and sense of self.

Later, doll & pattern companies cashed in on the idea and came out with additional versions of so-called Topsy Turvy Dolls: Smiling/Crying, Awake/Asleep, Red Riding Hood/Grandma/Wolf, 2 different white dolls, etc. These are not authentic Topsy Turvy Dolls and (I feel) represent and underhanded and dismissive attempt to erase history.

Please let me know if you know of any good reference material on this doll. I think this is a very important piece of historical black memorabilia.

All the very best!LatinLadyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14774285574673440442noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6047557606653771556.post-15289740256149956952013-03-27T05:46:12.420-05:002013-03-27T05:46:12.420-05:00Congratulations on your eBay win and thank you for...Congratulations on your eBay win and thank you for sharing the links to the 1960s Japan-made Topsy dolls. It is a dark and disturbing reality that many Topsy's existed in America and other areas of the world. Some may still be in existence, which is disheartening. My heart bleeds for Topsy.

dbgBlack Doll Enthusiasthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07534871309015210903noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6047557606653771556.post-30490989140547055162013-03-06T08:17:59.888-06:002013-03-06T08:17:59.888-06:00Thay was very enlighteningThay was very enlighteningLady_Rosehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13631530275831893501noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6047557606653771556.post-8245748562092101332013-03-06T06:20:47.517-06:002013-03-06T06:20:47.517-06:00Thank you for sharing our American History of Blac...Thank you for sharing our American History of Black Dolls!Sandra L.
