The Moxie Girlz by MGA Entertainment, the manufacturers of the infamous Bratz dolls, does not include Sasha, the dark-skinned Moxie Girlz, as a basic doll, while a blonde and brunette are offered as basics at Target stores. Sasha is also excluded from the Best Friends Dollpack (a set of two dolls), and to add further insult to injury, salt to my gaping wound, the Moxie Girlz commercials (I've seen two versions) also exclude Sasha as well as a real-live Sasha counterpart. It's interesting to note that the commercial begins with a girl saying, "It's okay to be kinda different..."
Commercial 1
Commercial 2
When little African American girl doll lovers view these commericials, they are presented with at least two options: 1) To desire one of the other dolls in the line because, based on the commercial, Sasha does not exist; and 2) left wondering why a Moxie Girlz that represents them, a) does not exist, and/or b) is not included in the commerical. Is it not okay for them to be different?
The fact is that two Sasha Moxie Girlz dolls exist--Moxie Girlz Jammaz Sasha and Moxie Girlz Art-titude Sasha. There is also a Magic Hair Torso Sasha, but the dark-skinned doll is missing in action from some Moxie Girlz offerings including the commercials I have viewed.
Why not be inclusive MGA Entertainment and offer all versions of the dolls in every product and include Sasha in all advertisements?

my daughter asked for a doll and i had to look online find a black one. i did not see the commercial but she said there was not a black one. i found it at walmart.com but there is one store in my area that has it, which is almost 20 miles away and they are sold out on the site... makes me mad.
ReplyDeleteI understand your frustration! I'm sorry Wal-Mart.com is out of the dolls online. I hope you're able to find the doll for your daughter soon.
ReplyDeleteThe weird thing about the MIA Sashas is that MGA Entertainment used to be recognized for their racial diversity.
ReplyDeleteHi there!
ReplyDeleteI just read on the Internet that the reason why you don't find Sasha any more is that MGA were idiotic enough to use the same name as for the Bratz doll. Why is this a problem? Because the Mattel lawsuit that ceased the production of Bratz covers this Moxie doll as she has the same name. They are replacing her with Bria, but I agree that I have not seen a lot of this new doll. I think they are still new and we should see how it pans out.
Just found your post. I've been searching for the Bria doll at all the local places and not a single one. Tried toysrus, walmart, kmart, and target. I think she's even prettier then Sasha was. Out of all those places they only had 1 single sasha doll at target. Kind of ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteMGA came out with another line of fashion dolls called Moxie Teenz. They released all but one of the dolls. Can you guess which one? Yep, you're right...Bijou...the Black doll!!! Unbelievable this day and age we still have to put up with this treatment. I am too through giving my hard earned money to these companies that don't value our people or our business. By the way, why are all the latest Black dolls being made with blue eyes? Give me a break!
ReplyDeleteI just wrote MGA about Bijou's absence a couple of days ago. They did not offer an explanation as to why the fourth, darkest (but not really dark) doll in this line was not released along with the other dolls in the line. They stated she will be available in stores beginning in August (fall release). As to why companies like MGA have watered down black dolls or created an ethnically ambiguous doll, I believe this is an attempt to kill multiple birds with one stone. These racially ambiguous dolls can be identified as African American, Hispanic, biracial, and possibly even Asian.
ReplyDeleteJust found Moxie Teenz Bijou on Target.com. You can order her now, but she won't arrive for 2 to 4 weeks. She is the only one of the four who is only available online. I am so thrilled that I finally got her ordered!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up. I'm off to Target.com (through Ebates.com first to get the 3% cash back Target.com pays for entering their site through Ebates.com) to order Bijou. Thanks again!

ok looking for a doll for my daughter the sasha dolls better the bria doll has big blue eyes is there a hair doll for african american children that reflects us hair eyes facial features im one of those black is beautiful teaching mamas but I can not find a doll worthy of the title...
ReplyDeleteIf you are looking for a doll with brown eyes with combable hair, the doll I featured at this link Nina, sold through TRU stores and Toys R Us online might work. The doll you select depends on the age of your child and the price you're willing to pay. I have Moxie Girlz Sasha and Bria currently listed together in an eBay auction if you're interested.
ReplyDeleteIf curly (non-combable) hair is okay, Toys R Us also offers Journey Girls Taryn which is definitely not a white doll colored brown. There is a link to Taryn's TRU sale page at the first link I shared above.
I hope this helps!
