Glam Barbie's New Wig

Brown curly wig by Limbe Dolls

Glam Barbie with Asha face was introduced here after finding at Big Lots in 2009, purchased because of her red, knee-high boots.

After reading Limbe Dolls' Yogalicious post and seeing the brown curly locks wig worn by the yoga "instructor," Bea Garrett, I wanted this style wig for one of my girls.  I had no idea which doll would enjoy wearing it mainly because I did not want to cut any of my dolls' hair.

Braided original hair is tucked under in back.

Instead of cutting her hair to accommodate the wig, I gave Glam Barbie two braids, fastened the ends together with a rubber band, and tucked the ends under at the nape of her neck. The wig cap does not completely cover the braids in the back, but the curls of the wig provide the necessary coverage.

As a rule, I do not rename my dolls, but in this case, Glam Barbie has been renamed Paulette, after the Limbe Dolls author and maker of her new wig.

Paulette, sitting pretty

Paulette may eventually get a body upgrade, but for now she sits on my computer hutch where I can enjoy her new look on a daily basis.

  1. What a sweet face she has! I don't usually like anything Barbie related but this doll is lovely.

  2. Thanks, Erin. "Paulette," does have a sweet face, but I must confess that after Mattel used this sculpt almost exclusively for their playline dark-skinned Barbies from the late 1990s through the mid-to-late 2000s, I quickly tired of it. In its absence in the last few years, I have regained an affection for the "Asha" sculpt.

If you are a collector, what types of dolls do you collect/prefer?

    1. I don't actively collect but I have my collection of Madame Alexander dolls that were Christmas and birthday presents from my grandparents when I was young (1970s). Although I have been known to buy a doll once in a while as an adult!

And I make (and sell) doll clothing in several different sizes: http://forrestofshadows.com/shop5.htm

And I have had reproduction doll clothing in a museum exhibit. The original clothing was so fragile that it needed to be wrapped in acid-free tissue paper so I very carefully examined the clothing and copied it so that the poor dolls would not need to be naked!

    2. Hi Erin,

Thanks for sharing a link to your shop.

My collection is not limited to playscale size dolls. I often find vintage dolls (mostly compostion, some hard plastic) in need of clothing. I'll keep your shop bookmarked in case I need your services in the future.

  3. I like the leopard print skirt my namesake is wearing. Several years ago I made a whole collection of leopard print outfits for myself -- skirt, jacket, dress, and jumpsuit.

    1. I think the leopard skirt was also a reason I purchased this doll. In fact, I think I liked her entire outfit. That plus the $5 cost at Big Lots sealed the deal.

I know you looked great in your leopard print fashions.

  4. She looks great! I didn't think you could do that with a wig...or maybe it is because limbe dolls wigs have a strech cap. I had this doll and I sold her. I might have kept her if I had a limbe dolls wig. Those wigs have to be one of my next purchase!

    1. Thank you, Ms. Leo. Yes, the stretch of the wig cap allows more flexibility than a wig with a nonflexible cap. But, as I indicated in the post, the back of the wig cap does not completely cover the doll's hair/head. Maybe Paulette can think about designing wigs for people like me who prefer not to cut their doll's hair who also enjoy the versatility of a wig.

She could use a model doll with shoulder length hair, braid it in two pony tails, like I did with ends tucked under in the back, and create the wig cap based on the circumference of the doll's head with hair. This style wig could also be made by special request. Just a thought.

      :-)

    1. Thank you, Jorge. This doll's fashion was actually provided by Mattel.

The leopard-print skirt has a built-in "thong," which is supposed to be panties. It's just a thin stip of black material, but better than nothing and better than panted-on undies.

I bought that doll, too, for the same reasons - the outfit and the pretty face ;-)

  10. She very pretty to look at and I too would have her sitting at my desk so I could look at her. She really does rock that outfit.
