The White House Project

Barbie® I Can Be…™ President B Party™ Doll (click the images to enlarge)
I saw sufficient quantities of Barbie® I Can Be… President at Target last week for $13.99 and  incorrectly assumed I could purchase online since I have not used this quarter's Barbie Fan Club reward (worth $20 off a purchase amount above $20).  After checking online, I discovered the doll is now sold out at BarbieCollector.com.   I returned to Target yesterday where quantities were not as plentiful for the African American version.  I immediately carted my doll.

Barbie I Can Be President B Party Doll has new head sculpt.

It should be noted that the doll I purchased does not have the Desiree head sculpt as shown at BarbieCollector.com.  The face is similar, but is clearly different.  The head does not appear as over-sized as the Desiree sculpt; the eyes are closer set; the face is wider, and the cheek bones a little more prominent.  I like the new face!

President Barbie and Fashionista Artsy (Desiree sculpt) in a comparison head shot.  There is too much flash on Artsy's face, but you should be able to see they are different.

According to the front of doll's box, she can "literally" stand on her own.  I think her clunky pink shoes aid in this ability.  As far as articulation goes, the knees are not articulated, but both elbows and wrists are.

Interestingly, the back of the box illustrates a full length image of the doll using the Desiree head sculpt.

The designer of this doll's fashion is Chris Benz, whose head shot, which includes pink hair, and brief bio are also on the back of the box.

I will eventually debox President Barbie, but for now, I will enjoy her in the box.

  1. She's pretty, congrats! Does she at least have bend-click knees or are they muse knees?

    Good post!

  2. Congratz! I saw her at Target too! I love her suit and thought about purchasing her just for the suit. I was suprised how easy the box opened. Mattel will make it hard for you to open the box in the store. When I opened it I notice that the shoes are made on to the feet like a my first barbie. Ugh! I guess if you want little girls to think about being president, that is what you do.

  3. Tracy India: Glad you enjoyed this post and thanks for the congratz. As Ms. Leo indicated, the box is very easy to open. So I opened it to check out her legs. Uggggh!!! They are "straight up plastic!" Shaking my head in disgust. Has anyone ever done a leg transplant?

Ms. Leo -- Yep, those shoes are permanently attached to the doll's feet. Until you mentioned this and until I opened the box to double-check, I didn't know this. I might have left her at Target had I known about those plastic legs and shoes. Oh well... I like her face and the outfit is nice, but dang Mattel.

    1. I have done a leg transplant with a certain type of leg! http://i-luv-dolls.blogspot.com/2011/10/my-pre-halloween-leg-transplant.html
      Hope this helps!

    2. Thanks, Ms. Leo. If I keep the doll (I may give her to my niece), the leg transplant looks like a project for my husband. He has restrung dolls for me in the past and I already have the elastic cord on hand. I'll just need to find the replacement legs.

      :-)

    3. Ugh! Man, I wonder if Mattel's thinking was she'd loose presidential votes if she could actually sit down? LOL...crazy people runnin' things at Mattel.

That's too bad, she's got a gorgeous face. Thanks for the info. :)

  4. She has shown up at my Target as well. They had them all except for the Asian doll. I like this face also. Cute!

    1. I did not realize there was an Asian version of this doll. Thanks, Georgia Girl. The jury is still out on whether I will keep her or not. Her face and fashion and what she represents say, yes. Those plastic legs say no.

  5. I haven't been to Target as of yet but now that I know the shoes are attached to her feet I will pass. What was Mattel thinking?, UGH!!

    1. I know Brini. Don't waste that trip. I still have my receipt. I am heading in that direction in a few. She may just find her way back onto Target's shelves.

Honestly, though, I know Mattel was not thinking about the adult collector when they fashioned this doll. But on the other hand, she is featured at Barbiecollector.com, so who knows what they were thinking with this doll's plastic legs and permanently attached shoes.

  6. Hooray for the new head sculpt. I ordered the Asian version last month from BC, but it was backordered by two weeks. I ended up canceling it.

    1. The Asian is either popular or was created in lower numbers than the others. You would have had to rebody her, so it's probably good you cancelled the order.

  7. Straight legs and shoes attached to the feet?! I'm totally going to pass on these girls.
