Seen Today at Target

African American Photo Fashion Barbie

Prior to today, I did not know an African American version of Photo Fashion Barbie was planned.

Product Description:
"If you can picture it, Barbie doll can wear it! Girls can customize this 11.5-inch Barbie doll's shirt by taking photos with the embedded digital camera-the pictures are then displayed immediately on the shirt! Or girls can select from several preloaded graphics for the same effect. Plug Barbie doll into the computer via USB cable to edit the pictures further using the web-based software. Control the viewing through three buttons on Barbie doll's belt. The technology features capacity for more than 100 photos! Includes Barbie doll with embedded digital camera and LCD screen, stand, USB cable, rechargeable battery and instructions."

I had only seen the white version online at several websites and blogs without mention of the African American version.  This led me to believe Mattel had overlooked the segment of the market that would want this version.

Photo Fashion Barbie, back of box

I am as happy, as it appears the young girl is on the back of the box, that this version does, in fact, exist.  I saw her up close and personal at Target today.  Upon my return home, I googled the doll's name to see if merchants were still omitting information about this version.

Toys R Us does have the AA version on their website (the source of the above product description).    The doll is currently $25 at TRU since all Barbies, play sets, and accessories are 50% off (valid through today, 10/13/12, excludes collector dolls).

  1. Thanks for sharing this information, DBG. I don't want this doll now, but she could be useful ... a spy amongst the other dolls, lol.

  3. My stores has carried both versions. I have seen her at Target, Walmart, and TRU. I'm glad you were able to get her. I feel that she will be a popular doll for Christmas for little girls.

  4. Oh no GG, I didn't buy, but I was concerned because I thought this version was not being made. Had I wanted, I would have taken advantage of TRU's sale price.

Jorge -- I like dolls wearing jeans, too.

D7ana -- I am passing on this one as well.

    1. Hi Marta,

The ability to digitally change the image on Barbie's T-shirt with her built-in camera is a neat concept. I think little girls will love this doll.

  6. Glad you finally saw her. I mentioned the AA version in one of my posts a little over a month ago. I had seen her and have since seen her in person as well. Pretty cool concept. Love her outfit, too.

    1. I remember your post Vanessa but can only visualize the image of the white doll. I am happy Mattel made this product inclusive.

  7. This is interesting and neat piece of tech. So the doll's 'shirt' has an 'organic LED' or some fancy screen embedded on it so it's like a tiny display frame.

She probably also can do double duty as a USB storage device if some mad hacker could put a bigger memory chip in.

It's not something very practical as it's not a real digital camera nor is it a data storage device but as a toy for a kid or junior collector this could be very fun to play with. You could upload interesting photos or take interesting pictures on road trips using the dollcam.

Having a kind of wierd imagination I also think a femme fatale character for a 007 type book could use such a doll as a covert espionage device with a hidden high definition camera and other sensors. No one would expect a Barbie doll to be recording all their state secrets as the heroine, in whatever role she's pretending to do in the enemy's lair just happens to be a typical doll enthusiast :3

  8. I've seen the demo in the store and the quality of the photos reminds me of my old Nintendo camera. I was interested in the previous video doll versions that didn't have a LCD screen but even on clearance they were in the $30 range. Pass.
