I always write, "I don't do dioramas," but the purchase of the above scented oil air freshener prompted the creation of one. It wasn't until I opened the package that I realized the lamp-shaped air freshener is 1:6 scale or close enough.
I thought I should take a leap to create a simple diorama to illustrate the scale. So I placed the air freshener back in the packaging and snapped the first image above.
My husband's assistance was employed to find a household item to use as an end table to hold the lamp. With his creative eye and instructions to try this, try that; do this, do that, the simple diorama featuring Alvin Ailey's American Dance Theater Barbie and her chaise lounge resulted.
What we used:
The air freshener is the lamp.
Two white plastic cutting boards create the side walls, angled to create depth.
Black velour cloth serves as the back wall and floor.
A white washcloth is a throw rug.
A crystal dessert dish covered with a coaster creates the coffee table.
The wall art is a thumbnail image pasted onto the original image.
Pretty neat, right?
As I was snapping photos, Husband asked, "You never thought you'd be a 50-year-old woman still playing with dolls, did you?" My answer was, "No," and I thought to myself, "I'm much closer to 60 than 50, and I'll still be playing with dolls then too."

Too CUTE!
ReplyDeleteGreat job Debbie and husband! Lol! I love the chaise. I am pretty much a sucker for and love anything animal print. This is the beginning. Now that you have the 1/6 eye...that can be trouble (lol) because you will begin to analyze any and everything to see if it can be used in some shape or form for 1/6 scale dolls.
ReplyDeleteYour husband is too funny. Lol! I probably never thought I would be playing with dolls at this age either, but I can't imagine ever stopping. This is the best hobby in the world! ; )
Have a lovely Saturday!
I was only able to get one of the brown air fresheners from Family Dollar!:( I wanted two. I got a few other colors at the Dollar Store! I love what you did with it. I want to do something with the lamp base too. I can't imagine not playing with dolls now either!
ReplyDeleteThanks, ladies.
ReplyDeleteI went into Family Dollar this week looking for SIS dolls for a swap I am participating in. (GG -- they are not on sale here). A shopping cart filled with what appeared to be discounted air fresheners was at the front of the store, where I found the lamp-shaped one used here. I purchased it to be used for its intended purpose, but after opening the package and seeing what I saw it as, the diorama resulted.
I don't think I will ever do as many dioramas as some of you talented ladies have done because I don't have the space to store the items needed. Now, I do love exercising my meager creative talents to repurpose and utilize on-hand items, so I won't say never. I just do know that I won't create another hobby intentionally.

Go, DBG! Thanks for sharing the news about the lamp. Your diorama is classy. Lucky Alvin Ailey's American Dance Theater Barbie!
ReplyDeleteI, too, see myself never giving up dolls and action figures ;-D
Thanks, D7ana. If I never buy another doll (and that is highly unlikely), I have enough in the doll family to enjoy for the rest of my life. I am sure you agree.

I am always thrilled to see your creative endeavors. It's always a bonus when husband is involved. I've been using these lamps for about a year now. For one of them, I added shells inside the base once the air freshener was gone. Love the room! Alvin Ailey Barbie looks pleased with your results.
ReplyDeleteHi Vanessa,
DeleteI knew some of you probably were already using these lamps. Emptying the oil and filling the base with something else is an excellent idea, or just leaving it empty. Since I am using it for its intended purpose, I didn't want to waste the oil for the purpose of the diorama. I knew you pros would know what to do with it.

NICE!!!!!!!!!

I'm 46 and most definitely enjoying playing with my dolls, ^__^.
ReplyDeleteThis dio is sleek and fashionable! I have been looking for those freshners for months. My Dollar Trees just don't have them. :( I also cant find those chapsticks that are shaped liked soda bottles either. double :(
Hi Muff,
DeleteI found this one at Family Dollar. Maybe you'll have better luck finding it there.
I'll have to be on the lookout for the soda bottle-shaped Chapstick. If I have seen them in the past, it didn't register what else they could be used for.
