Black Is Beautiful: Why Black Dolls Matter

Rashahn and Lil Bitty Kayla by Lorna Miller-Sands; and doll with painted cloth face by Rita Williams of Crafty Sisters.

I was one of several people interviewed by Lisa Hix of Collectors Weekly on the subject of black dolls. The results of the interview are included in Hix's beautifully written article, "Black Is Beautiful:  Why Black Dolls Matter."  The article was published today and can be read here

  1. I really enjoyed the article! It is great to see people like you, the young film-maker, and the Britt sisters educating the public about black dolls.

    1. Thanks, Paulette. I am glad you read the article and enjoyed it.

DB (Debbie Britt) and her sisters are doing remarkable work in educating the public about the relevance of black dolls. Their Doll-E-Daze project has culminated in the National Black Doll Museum in Mansfield, MA and I know their work continues.

I am so proud of Samantha Knowles' and her film "Why Do You Have Black Dolls." It needs national exposure.

I love the way Ms. Hix was able to weave our separately conducted interviews together to create this article, and I hope readers who enjoy it will show her some love by posting positive comments on the Collectors Weekly website.

  2. She did a wonderful job on the article! I think many of us who have a large collection of Black dolls have been posed with the question, "Why?". She answers the question quite well. Many of us have also resorted to creating dolls in our own image, which is the reason I started making porcelain dolls. It is a shame that even today, there aren't more Black owned companies producing Black dolls in a variety of shades.

    1. Hi Vanessa,

I am glad you were able to read the article.

Collectors in general are probably asked why they collect whatever it is they collect, but I know as a black-doll collector, I have been asked more than once if I only collect black dolls or why I collect them. It is bothersome to have to explain the reason, but I try to do so as tactfully as possible.
