Actual images of the currently
sold out at BarbieCollector.com Texas A&M University Ken doll were
shared with me by fellow doll enthusiast, Cynthia Wilson. Cynthia graciously allowed me to share her
images here along with a comparison image of Aggie Ken with Barbie Basics Model
17. (Click the images to enlarge.)
This image includes the back of the box which contains the lyrics of the Aggie War Hymn. Before the dolls sold out, smart shopper, Cynthia, purchased two. |
After Cynthia freed one, he immediately showed off his articulated arms. |
Now his wrist action and additional elbow movement are illustrated along with a closer look at his handsome face. |
A little knee and ankle flexion and extension took place next. |
The final image is a comparison of Texas A&M Ken with Barbie Basics Model 17.
Cynthia and I agree that Aggie Ken appears to have a wider face with darker hair. Cynthia also thinks the articulated doll's top lip is fuller. (He's from Texas and we all know that things are bigger in Texas.)
Thank you again Cynthia for sharing your images and congratulations on being among those who received quantities of the first run of this doll.
The link to six additional images of Texas A&M Ken were shared by blog reader, Meg Sense. These can be viewed here (nude doll caution). Thanks Meg Sense for the share!
Hopefully, for those of us who “slept” on placing our online orders, stock will be replenished soon or Texas A&M Ken will show up in our local markets. It is also my hope that Mattel acts upon the loud and clear message that articulated African American male dolls (in more than one head sculpt) are desired and will indeed sell.
For those interested, here is Texas A&M Ken's Ordering Page (to bookmark and check for replenishment of stock). Note that the "add to bag" option is available, but once it is clicked "unavailable" appears.)

WOW! He looks good and from the back too! ;) His hair is a little darker?... Hmmm and the face is wider too. There often slight differences in the same doll. My SIS Chandra's head seemed narrower. I will still be excited to get mine!
ReplyDeleteThe differences appear very minor, Ms. Leo. I was hoping to do a comparison with my own dolls. Unfortunately, I didn't order the A&M guy before the sell out. Model 17 remains alone here.

I add two to my collection & am waiting for them to come!
DeleteGood for you, Ms. Leo. I kept going to BarbieCollector.com and looking at the order page after he became available. I also kept telling myself I needed to wait on ordering because I had already spent too much money on my BD doll. Oh well... sometimes you loose when you snooze. Congrats on your two.

Thanks for the pictures. They did a great job on the body. I'm so happy they did full articulation. He wasn't on my list since I had already articulated my guy, but this is great to see.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Vanessa, they did a great job on his body. Now the key is to get him back in stock for those who still want him.

THANK YOU FOR SHARE THE AWESOME CYNTHIA'S PICTURES!!!
Ohh,I'm Sorry Debbie!!
ReplyDeleteNow I Noticed The Information SOLD OUT In The Text...
Ohh My Goddddd!!!
I can feel your excitement as well as your disappointment that this guy is sold out Jorge. I am sure he will be back in stock soon since Barbiecollector.com did not remove the "add to bag" button and replace it with a SOLD OUT on the buy page. As soon as he is back in stock, I will post an update and/or let you know personally.

WOW, sold out already?! This better be a message to Mattel that articulate Ken dolls are needed and African American Ken dolls are double needed, LOL. I wanted to order multiples of him but at least I have one on it's way. I had a feeling this was going to happen because we've all been wanting and waiting for it. I just spoke to BC and they said they have no idea if they will receive more, she was doubtful but he's Pink Label so we can look to get him at TRU, Walmart, etc. I feel like BC should order more because these dolls were just released...eh.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for posting this and if I see anything regarding new stock, I will shoot you a comment ASAP.
I am glad you were able to order one, Tracy. Your doll should arrive soon. Cynthia received her last week and several others did as well.
DeletePlease do keep me informed on new stock. There's no need for me to check my Target, at least not until sometime next year. That store just received the Baby Phat SIS dolls.

I'm not overly familiar with Barbie Collector, but I know that some of their lines are only sold on that website. I still haven't seen any of the other previous cheerleader versions in the stores. I hope this makes it to places like Tuesday Morning because I would snap up both male versions. I didn't even know that Mattel made articulated ankles.
ReplyDeleteHi Muff,
DeleteThe Aggie guys are Pink Label, considered play line. So they should show up in local markets. When is the question particularly since the buy page on Barbiecollector.com now reads "Sold Out" for the AA one.

It was at least more than a year after the release of #17 that I saw him in a store! Somehow I don't think this guy will hit the stores anytime soon if at all. If we do see any of the cheerleaders, it will be the girls.
ReplyDeleteSigh. I missed him at BC. Hope to get him if/when they reissue him - crossing my fingers on that.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this detailed article, DBG! Now I have to get one.
Very welcome. ;] I'm so in love with this doll!
