Playscale Fashion Dolls and American Girl Minis

Left-to-right, back-to-front are 11-1/2-inch fashion dolls and 6-inch Mini American Girls:  Janay and Kaya; Desiree and 25th Anniversary Special Edition Cecilé Ray; Grace and Christmas Addy, Kayla and Original Addy.  Note:   Original Mini Addy has inset eyes.  All others have painted eyes.

After reading a post over at Fashion Dolls at Van's Doll Treasures where she uses mini American Girl (AG) Cecilé as the daughter in her Morgan family, I paired the mini AGs in my collection with 11-1/2-inch fashion dolls. While I do not create doll families, I wanted to further illustrate for those of you who do that the mini dolls can work quite well as playscale children.

Because most mini AG dolls wear period costumes and have period hairstyles that date back to the 1700s (Kaya), redressing and restyling the hair will be in order for many.  Original Addy's hair is wigged.  All others have rooted hair.  Kaya's two side braids remain a current hairstyle for young girls.  A photo of the other dolls' hair from the back is shown next.

Cecilé's hairstyle is relatively current.  Christmas Addy has a pulled back and tucked under braid that is timeless.  Original Addy's French braid looks a little old fashioned.

The heads, arms, and legs are vinyl. As Cecilé illustrates above, they have cloth bodies.  The dolls retail for $24, which includes a mini abridged version of one of their books.

At the time of this writing, the following minis are on sale at the American Girl website:

Caroline Mini Doll $10
Marie-Grace Mini Doll $10
Cecilé Mini Doll $10

The sale price is subject to change at AG's discretion.

If there is an American Girl store in your area, check the price there to possibly save on shipping and have fun creating your doll families or fun just enjoying the dolls.

  1. Awesome. I didn't know you had so many mini AGs. Thanks for the shout out. I was tempted to take advantage of that $10 sale. I looked at other sites, that normally have mini AGs on sale, and no one else has them for such a great price. Now you have me thinking.....darn you. I hope to find the Indian one on sale in the future. I really like the dress your Cecile is wearing. Mine came in the plaid blue and green dress.

    1. You're welcome, Vanessa. Kaya (the Native American) is one of my favorites. I have the 18-inch version as well. I have two mini Cecilé's. The one I photographed nude wears a turquoise (blue/green) dress. As seen here. The 25th Anniversary Mini Cecilé must have sold out. She was a limited edition a couple of years ago.

  2. FYI, I have been on the AG site for over an hour now. I wanted to get the Caroline doll, but didn't want to pay the $5.95 shipping for just one thing. So I went to their 'sale' section. They have a lot of the paper doll hardback books, with the really nice 3 room settings marked down to $5! Yes, they have the one with Cecile. She's with the Marie Grace doll. I have $45 sitting in my cart waiting for me to push the button. What the heck happened? Can I really pass up $5 paper doll books. Here is an Amazon link to the Cecile book. I went to Amazon so I could see inside the books.

    1. Hi Vanessa,

I believe I do have the Cecile and Marie-Grace paper doll book. I'll have to double-check. Don't you need Marie-Grace AND Caroline? Marie-Grace is Cecile's friend. They need to be together. I searched to see if there is a free shipping code available for you to use, but wasn't able to find one. Let me know what you decide.

    2. I bought Caroline, 5 of the paper doll books, and 1 of the color and craft books. All of that shipped for $5.95. Not a bad deal at all. I'm hoping to somehow use the paper doll book backgrounds for my fashion dolls. Not sure how just yet.

    3. Wonderful! $5.95 shipping certainly wasn't bad for all you purchased. Wish I could have read your comment sooner and enabled you to buy Marie-Grace, too. :-)

  3. Thanks for sharing this additional information, DBG! Nice to see the AG dolls with the Barbies: I think the AGs are a little wider. They add a nice body shape variation to the playscale kids.

    1. Yes, they are a little wider than most playscale kids, D7ana, but we can imagine that they are experiencing their chubby years of childhood. Most kids (although I didn't) go through that stage. I waited until I gave birth to my 2nd child. :-)

  4. WOW! I did really want to see what their bodies look like! It nice that they are on sale too! I'll have to get a few! Have you put other doll clothes on yours? Do you know what other clothing fits them? I looked at the room settings too! Nice! I wonder what the scale of the room settings are? I wish they had the dress that your Celcile' is wearing. That dress is lovely! On the hair styles..., I do think we still see all those hairstyles in our community. If you have the hair for it, someone will style your hair in those styles! Out of all the mini, Ivy's outfit is the most current! Thanks for this post!

    1. You are welcome, GG! Breaking news! American Girl will be retiring four dolls: Cecile (the only non-slave AA doll) her friend Marie-Grace, and another doll pair, Ruthie and her Asian sidekick, Ivy. Ivy is the only Asian doll in the 18-inch historic doll category and Cecile is from a financially stable, 1850s New Orleans family. There has been a little uproar over the company retiring two ethnically diverse characters. Read more here.

  8. Thank for sharing all the minis. I never knew about the mini AG until Vanessa post and of course I started looking for different varieties. The are all very cute and with them retiring four dolls they are going to drive up the cost like crazy. I'm going to try and get a pair

    1. Glad you were further informed, Brini. I agree, the price will escalate on the dolls that are retiring and they will probably sell out at the website soon (the minis and the 18-inch dolls). I did a search on eBay for the 18-inch Cecile and see that some sellers have the doll priced over $200 when it is still available at the AG website for the original price of $110 with book or $129 with accessories (her hat and gloves are thrown in). I am tempted to buy 18-inch Cecile since she is the only AA ever created whose history does not reflect slavery. I have two Addys in 18-inch (one was my daughters) and Kaya (the Native American) in 18-nch. I am still sleeping on purchasing 18-inch Cecile, but I probably better not sleep too long, especially since the website indicates quantities are extremely limited. Yikes!
