Saucy the Doll that Makes Faces

Among other dolls, page 187 in Black Dolls A Comprehensive Guide... illustrates, describes and values Mattel's Saucy Makes Faces.

Saucy the doll that makes faces (wearing the pink dress in the above image) was manufactured by Mattel.  She has a copyright date of 1972. When the doll's left arm is moved in a full circle, she changes her facial expression approximately 18 times.

For a brief period yesterday I could not remember where my doll was located.  I found her among other dolls manufactured for the play market in the linen closet in a Rubbermaid bin.

After writing this post with my iPad using the speech recognition feature, I created a video that shows several of Saucy's expressions.

The clunky sound her arm makes is a little annoying, but I still think Saucy's a fun, non-battery-operated doll.

    1. Thank you, GG. It took me a while to find this funny girl when I began my search during the 1990s. I eventually found her in a Collectors United ad, I think (pre-Internet doll buying).

    1. Thanks RM1987 - I hope you are able to purchase your Saucy soon. Someone I know just posted another black version on eBay, mint in box.

    1. I knew some people would find her creepy, Roxanne! Now I am wondering if small children found her frightening.

    2. I had one and I loved her! My grandmother would say she made faces just like me. Maybe I was "creepy" or just very expeessive.

  4. Her facial expressions range from cuteness extreme to Bride of Chucky. Several of them made me laugh out loud at how adorable and equally scary they were. You have the most fantastic dolls.

    1. Check out the one that is on eBay now that a doll friend is selling: Saucy Makes Faces. If it sells for the asking price, I might need to tell this little girl bye-bye. I don't have her original box, though.

  5. This doll reminds me too much of Chucky. I have never seen a Chucky movie, and I found it difficult to watch the video. It also disturbed me seeing her poor arm turning like that. So unnatural.

  6. I'm sorry Saucy's faces and arm movement disturbed you, Vanessa.

The doll didn't get pulled from the market, so I don't think it was alarming or disturbing for the intended market (children) back in 1972/73.

  8. I had one as a little girl. I just loved her I have searched for years to find Sausy. N now I see her on eBay everywhere. I kept telling my mom see Sausy existed. You turn her arm n she makes faces. I never forgot her. Now people think she’s creepy. Back then we weren’t exposed to everything like we are now. So we didn’t think about creepy. We just played n laughed.
