A word from the Detroit Doll Show host, Sandra Epps:
I believe it is important for Women and Children to see themselves in the products that they use. Dolls teach children about themselves and the world around them. Playing with dolls helps children develop cognitive, fine motor and self-help skills. Most importantly, Dolls can teach self love. Often times than not brown women and children struggle to love themselves because of the negative stereotype portrayed in the media, in addition to society's depiction of "beauty."  It is true that image is everything and to see ones reflection in their dolls, magazines, television, etc. is most healthy.  We as aunts, uncles, mothers, fathers, and friends must not only define our own beauty but encourage our children to love the skin that they are in.
YES YOU are Beautiful no matter what
SHADE of SKIN You’re IN!

The Detroit Doll Show is about celebrating diversity, culture, fashion, YOUR BEAUTY and having FUN.

    1. Hey Muff,

Based on repeat attendees, the annual Detroit Doll Show gets better each year.

As Chair, I volunteer my services as advisor, consultant, and promoter of Sandy's annual shows. Additionally, utilizing and sharing my passion for Black dolls, I stand ready to support her mission of promoting self-love in the minds and hearts of females, young and old. I am my sister's keeper.

    2. Muff, I'm most grateful to have Ms. Debbie as a Doll Mentor and Friend. She continues to inspire to host the Detroit Doll Show because of her love for Black Dolls. In addition, it is her willingness to share her knowledge with me and others that's truly a gift. I feel blessed to have her as an advisor, consultant and promoter and most importantly a FRIEND, she's AWESOME!

  2. WOW! Great video interviews! I'm glad to see that this doll show is doing well! I really miss the Phila doll show. How many people attend the show? How long in advance do you start preparing? As a person who works with the Phila Flower show, I know that only about 20% of our attendees come from Phila, the rest come from all over. How many people are local who attend? What is the farthest that they come?

    1. Ms. Leo, thank you for your feed back of the videos...The first year in 2012 we had 150 people to attend the Detroit Doll Show. Last year there was a snow storm the day of the show where we had up to six inches of snow and we still had 200 people to show up. There were folks who came as far as Chicago, New York, Ohio, Minnesota, and Canada to attend the Detroit Doll Show.

  3. Thank you for this information, Debbie! I've never been to a doll show, and it's on my list of things to do. I will not be able to travel to Detroit this year, but maybe next year I can do some planning and make it there. I enjoyed reading about the show and watching these interviews. Seeing the videos makes me want to be there even more!

    1. You are more than welcome Sandy. It is wonderful to see someone with your determination and "just do it" attitude put together something that many of us only dream to do. You are not a dreamer. You make things happen. I applaud you in your efforts and will always support you in any way I can. Here's hoping for a grand 2014 show!

  7. Congratulations on your new role, DBG! The Detroit Doll Show is an excellent place to benefit from your years of experience collecting Black dolls, years writing about Black dolls, and participation in the Black doll collecting communities.

Thanks for sharing the videos - always fun to see what others have in their collections!

I'm not likely to get to Detroit, but I will look forward to your coverage of that event.
