Last week I enjoyed watching the two-night, commercial-free airing of the first two episodes of "Queen Sugar," a new series which airs on OWN (the Oprah Winfrey Network), created and produced by Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey. The series is based on the book of the same name by Natalie Baszile. After reading the first chapter of the book prior to watching the DVR'd first episode, "First Things First," it became apparent that the first episode loosely follows chapter 1.
An online synopsis of the TV series reads:
"Queen Sugar" tells the story of the estranged Bordelon siblings in Louisiana. At the center of the family are Nova, a journalist and activist; Charley, the wife and manager of an NBA player; and formerly incarcerated father Ralph Angel, who is searching for redemption. Following a tragedy in the family, the siblings must put their complicated lives aside so that they can come together to run the clan's struggling sugar cane farm. Also involved in the farm are Aunt Violet and family friend Remy Newell.In the first episode, "First Things First," viewers were introduced to the members of the Bordelon family (mentioned above in the synopsis). Ralph Angel's young son, Blue, has a doll he calls Kenya. Blue is seen playing with Kenya in several scenes of the first episode. I immediately recognized his doll as a Barbie, but it took a few pauses of my DVR recording to fully identify her. The following photos helped with the identification:

Based on the doll's clothes, I was able to identify her as Barbie Style Grace, shown in the next image.

The first and second episodes of Queen Sugar will reair on Wednesday, September 14, 2016, on OWN beginning at 7 p.m. CST. The first airing of the third episode will begin at 9 p.m. CST. Check your local listings.

Congrats to Barbie Style Grace for her role in this new series! I did recognize her by her outfit in the second photo. I will have to watch the re-airing of the 1st 2 episodes. So I won't forget, I will set up my DVR to record!
ReplyDeleteI was surprised to see Grace on the show, Phyllis. Using a generic doll is used. They tried to disguise her by giving her the name, Kenya, but I knew she was a Barbie.
DeleteQueen Sugar is a good show with a good storyline and not too fast paced. I have my DVR set to record all first airings so I won't miss any shows as I am usually in asleep by 9 p.m. CST and have to play catch up on my recordings either the next day or on the weekend.

You have an excellent eye for detail. I would have guessed she was a Barbie because she's articulated ( so is Liv but she has that big head) but as to which specific Barbie? No clue whatsoever.

If they had changed Grace's clothes, I probably wouldn't have known, which doll it was. The clothing was the biggest clue.

I watched this show. I like it. I recognized Grace while he was playing with her in the park. I bought several of her for the body, so the clothes were a dead giveaway.

ReplyDeleteI keep forgetting to watch this show. I saw the previews and meant to watch. That reminds me, I need to see if I missed any episodes of Greenleaf. I love that show. I don't have that Grace, so I couldn't tell from her clothes. I love when there are dolls in tv shows. As long as they aren't killing anyone.
ReplyDeleteYou should enjoy Queen Sugar, Vanessa. I hope you get an opportunity to watch the previous episodes and future ones. Green Leaf was good. I think I might enjoy Queen Sugar more, but they are both good on different levels.
