At the end of the article, On Rebranding Barbie and Why Diversity Matters, by Tia S. Brown for ESPN W, Vice President of Global Marketing for Mattel Sejal Shah Miller, shares that a Gabby Douglas Barbie will be on the market in spring 2017!
I am not sure if the Gabby Douglas Barbie was already in the making or if the petition for it led to the doll becoming a reality. Either way, thanks, Mattel!
Hopefully Mattel will listen to those who have signed the current petition for an AA Silkstone® Ken and produce that doll as well.
Yes, doll diversity matters.

Check out my eBay listings here.
That will be a great doll to get. Such a pretty face and an articulated body? A combination that can't be beat.
ReplyDeleteI also hope Mattel keeps it up with their movement for diversity. It's very much appreciated.
I look forward to this doll's release Maricha. I know I will purchase more than one. One for myself and others as gifts.

This is GREAT news!!! I am jumping UP & DOWN! I commented on your original post (where you had the petition up) and I said how I posted it on BarbieCollector.com and A LOT of people were down right NASTY about the possibility of Ms. Douglas getting a doll. I was REALLY shocked and a little HURT.
ReplyDeleteWell, God don't like UGLY does he? #NOPE
I could not wait to post the LINK to this article on BarbieCollector.com saying that the Gabby Douglas was COMING! #VICTORY
Great stuff doll lovers!!!!!!
Sincerely,
Kia
Hi Kia,
DeleteI can feel your enthusiasm. I am excited about this as well. Thanks for spreading the word, although I am sure once the doll hits the market it will sell out quickly. I imagine several little-girl current and future gymnasts will enjoy owning a doll created in the likeness of a multiple-gold winning gymnast.
If you haven't already signed the petition for the African American Silkstone Ken that I created, please do so. Here is the direct link. Please also share this at BarbieCollector.com as well. Thank you, Kia!

Wonderful to hear!! I can't agree with you more on how diversity matters. I think it teaches love, respect and equality when little kids (and grown ups) can love and create their own characters from dolls that come from everywhere in the world. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteIt's always good to see the world outside your own (or create it through doll play), especially for children, which will help them appreciate that we are all unique human beings.
