2017 Barbie Fashionista #59 with Afro

2017 Barbie Fashionista #59 - box name:  Tropi-Cutie

After seeing the 2017 Toy Fair images of Barbie Fashionista #59, I put her on my mental wish list. Word of her availability on Amazon was shared Tuesday, May 23, 2017, through a screen snapshot posted to one of my Facebook doll groups.  Unfortunately, without the direct link I could not locate her by searching the site. By the time the direct link was shared, she had sold out, attesting to the doll's popularity or the limited quantities Amazon had available. Restocking took place Wednesday evening, May 24, 2017, literally seconds after I checked for availability, which initially indicated the doll was still currently unavailable.  Just as I was about to sign off Facebook, I received a tag to the doll's original post from Reese Velez indicating she was available.  (Thank you, Reese!)  I snatched her up quickly, taking advantage of free Prime shipping.  A 2016 Barbie Fashionista, that I just recently warmed up to, jumped in the cart as well. More about the second doll when both arrive.

Here is the direct link to the buy page.  Unfortunately, by the time I completed this post, the doll's status was "currently unavailable" again.  If you're interested in purchasing, save the link or add the doll to your Amazon shopping list (which is what I did so I could quickly check for availability).

I will reserve my overall commentary about her until after the actual doll arrives, but I know I will be making some changes to her overall look, with the pink lip color being the first immediate change.

  2. What, you're changing her lip color? I'm shocked. :) I love the look of her afro!

    1. Ha! You know how I am about light pink or loud pink lip color on dolls with brown complexions. Some dolls might be able to pull it off, but most (IMO) cannot. Less is better/subtle is more from my point of view.

I like her Afro, but they could have kept the part.

  3. Someone on Instagram posted some blurring pictures of the back of the box. Shows like 5 new Ken dolls, some of which have new Ken bodies!

    1. Thanks for the heads up about the different Kens on the back of the box. I will be sure to scan/photograph it and share it here after the doll arrives.

  5. I love how she looks. With that afro there will be so many clothing styles that will look good in her. Thanks for the link, I put her in my list.:-)

I noticed that even just searching for a doll seems to affect Amazon's software into offering you the doll when it becomes available. After you posted about Gabby's doll, I searched for her and there were none to even put in my list but lo and behold a few days later I got a suggestion to buy one from them so thanks again for that information.

    1. Oh yes, Amazon is good about tracking your searches and making search-based purchase suggestions. I am glad searching for the Gabby Douglas Barbie worked out in your favor a few days later.

  6. Holy Mackerel! That went fast. Thanks to your heads-up I was able to get the Musician AA Barbie in the second batch. Maybe this one will restock soon also. Fingers crossed. Thank you!

    1. I am glad you were able to get Musician Barbie on the second restocking.

I think they are only stocking a small amount of dolls at a time. I wonder if restocking is done around the same time, when it is done. If so, check the site in the evening. It was around 6:30 p.m. CST when I placed my order. I would check it periodically throughout the day, too.

    3. Thank you for the link! I did go back this morning and lo and behold there was one of her offered! Was she originally 9.99? Or have I been scalped?

I usually change all the pink lipstick also. I like to mix up a deep red, or paint them a shade darker or lighter than her skin tone. I usually make their eyeballs smaller and more round also. I'm wondering if I can get away with painting her teeth out. Some of the grins just look so...(I have to say it) Plastic.

I am getting old and look pretty funny hunched over with my blinding lights and my funky magnifying headband.

    4. Yes, Bailey she was originally $9.99. I am glad you were able to purchase.

Your repaints sound lovely. I bet she will look gorgeous once you're finished with her.

  7. She's GORGEOUS!!! Agree on the pink lipstick...odd cosmetic choice. I wonder how many of these dolls will have been purchased to resell on EBay at over inflated prices? Would it kill Mattel to manufacture an equal number of dolls to meet market needs...or perhaps Amazon caps how many of a doll can be purchased by one buyer. Of course it's even harder to find these limited dolls when you live outside the U.S. Long story short, she's gorgeous!! :)

    1. Hi Julius,

I'm sure there will be dolls on eBay at inflated prices. The scalpers are alive and well.

I don't understand Mattel's strategy of marketing. This doll is not even available at barbie.com or shop mattel.com. How Amazon is able to sell them first remains a mystery. I agree she is gorgeous, but the pink lipstick must go.

  9. I was just able to purchase one a few minutes ago! I'm so excited! Can't wait to see her in person! And I agree that the pink lipstick is really a turn off. I saw in an Amazon review someone changed her lips to red and it made all the difference. I've never altered a doll...I'm curious, what are you going to use to paint a seal?

    1. Wonderful! I hope you'll like her as much as I do (now that I have changed the lip color). I saw the images on Amazon. I might add images of my doll on there as well. I posted photos of the lip change and my overall assessment of the doll earlier today. Here is the direct link.

It is not necessary to seal the paint, but if that is desired, it can be sealed with a brush-on matte varnish or you can buy gloss acrylic paint, which has a built-in sheen. I believe the paint I used has a gloss finish. I buy all my acrylic paint and varnish in the craft section at Walmart.
