| Classic Cool's new hairline |
Still toying with Classic Cool Ken, I have again updated his look to add a hairline, stud earrings, a new shirt and shoes.
The hairline was inspired by a google search for "men with cornrows" where I saw this photo of English soccer player Glen Johnson and decided, yes, I think I can do that to add more realism. So I did.
Hairline Photos
I used brown Pentel oil pastel to shade in the hairline. To lend the appearance of actual strands of hair, I used a brown colored pencil to drawn fine, short strokes into the shaded area. (The same colored pencil was used to deepen the failed dye color of 35th Anniversary Barbie's torso.)
During the time the hairline was added, I asked my husband which of Classic Cool's earlobes should have an ear stud. He answered, "Both. Men wear earrings in both ears now." Fresh out of nail art bling, I made a mental note to purchase another package from the beauty supply store the next time I visited.
Last week I went there for hair color (no, I have not fully embraced my gray and too much hairline gray was visible). I knew there was something else I needed to buy but couldn't think of it. While taking the above photos of Classic Cool's new hairline, I remembered the nail art needed for his ears. The next day I returned to purchase it.
Ear Stud Placement
I placed a dab of Aleene's Tacky Glue on one earlobe, moistened the tip of my index finger, picked up the top side the tiny rhinestone and placed it on the glue. This process was repeated for the other earlobe.
New Shirt and Shoes
Classic Cool Ken exchanged his white shirt and mock necktie for Denim Ken #17's black long-sleeve T-shirt. His silver sneakers were replaced with the low-top black and white "Chucks" from Denim Ken's accessory pack. Attire-wise, this is not the exact style I want for him, but it's an improvement from the original.

Classic Cool is living up to his name. I love what you did to him. He looks much better this way. I still need to get him.
ReplyDeleteInterestingly, this evening my niece and I had a conversation about embracing gray hair. I was telling her I am not there yet. Lol! Of course, she was trying to convince me of all the reasons why I should allow the gray hairs to come through. It truly went into one ear and out the other. She has 4 strands.

DeleteLOL! "She has 4 strands." I have 4 strands at 12 (in the back of my head, but they were there). Each time the beautician did my hair, she reminded me, "You have gray hair!" My son had gray red hairs that turned gray at 4, only a few; but they were there. We gray prematurely.

He looks fantastic! Wow! I finally received mine and he is indeed a handsome lad (and his lips look totally natural, if you remember your last post and my comment). I am terrified to try any of this myself but I did give him a new shirt. You boy looks wonderful like this. You'd better be careful because all the ladies among the dolls will be fighting over him! (And as for grey hair - ugh. I tried to let mine grow out a few years ago and it was awful. Instead, I've embraced red streaks, LOL!)

ReplyDeleteA few cat fights have erupted in the doll room (behind my back, of course) and no one is admitting their involvement. :-) Fab Fringe, Emoji Barbie, and Tameka (an OOAK by Shasha) are the closest dolls near him along with three Monster High chicks. I'm not sure which ones were involved in the disturbance. :-)

He's really looking cool now. The shirt was a teensy bit on the nerd side;) I wouldn't have thought to add a hairline but it does give him something extra.
ReplyDeleteI like your earring idea. Some of my dolls have pierced ear and I did see your tutorial on how to do that but putting anything in contact with a dolls face worries me after seeing green ear problems on vintage fashion dolls. Using glue to stick on nail ornaments is safer.

DeleteI still pierce other dolls' ears the way I demonstrate in the tutorial, but for some reason I did not want to actually pierce his ears. The tiny rhinestones I used are small enough to be used as nose studs too for playscale dolls.
I believe there was a substance in the vinyl of vintage dolls that interacted with metal ear posts that eventually caused green ear in those dolls. That substance is no longer used in today's dolls, so I think ear piercing for modern dolls should be green ear-free.
