Updated: Opal Lee Inspiring Women Barbie

Dr. Opal Lee admires a showcase of Black dolls at the 2024 Queenish Black Dolls Showcase in Lancaster, Texas, as I and others look on.

Update: The buzz is true. Here is the Amazon link to purchase the Opal Lee Barbie.

Read more about this remarkable woman and the doll here.

A recent online buzz about Barbies planned for 2026 includes a portrait doll of the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," Dr. Opal Lee. A former educator, Dr. Lee's tireless and passionate civil rights work culminated in Juneteenth becoming a national holiday, signed into legislation by President Joe Biden in 2021.

While official information from Mattel is pending, the online buzz projects the release of the Opal Lee Barbie during Black History Month. It is unknown if the doll will be a one-of-a-kind or mass-produced. I am keeping my fingers crossed for a mass-produced doll.

  1. Hi Debbie! I just Googled it and saw an actual doll in a box! How wonderful! Thanks for the heads up.

  2. What an amazing woman! I really hope that is not the final version of the doll with drawn on wrinkles. Other than that, she looks great. The hair color mix is really good. And if that is a final version, drawn on wrinkles are better than no doll. I love learning about the people you post here.

    1. The drawn-on wrinkles scream "rush it to market" without much thought. I do hope the doll is produced, however.

  3. I still love her, drawn wrinkles and all. That part was not thought of well. But the hair color, soooo well done!! I am happy to have learned about her.

    1. I like her too, wrinkles and all, and I'm glad Mattel came through with this one.
