Vitiligo Awareness Month

June is Vitiligo Awareness Month and June 25th is Vitiligo Awareness Day. Dolls representing this skin condition which causes between 0.5% to 1% of the population to lose pigmentation are shown below:

Ndanaka is part of the Sibahle Collection.

A closeup of Ndanaka illustrates the extent of the vitiligo on the doll's face. Other affected areas are her arms, legs, and torso as illustrated here.

Barbie Fashionista #135 is flanked by two dolls my husband and I painted to represent people with vitiligo.

The repainted dolls were completed long before Mattel released Fashionista #135, but Mattel is to be applauded for including this doll in the Fashionista line.

Vitiligo is defined as:

1. a condition in which the pigment is lost from areas of the skin, causing whitish patches, often with no clear cause.

That is what it is called.

Chad's New Body

My Chadwick Boseman figure is seen after the head was attached to a body that I attempted to dye to match the color of the head. The hands absorbed too much dye and the body didn't absorb enough.

After the dyeing failure of the above action figure body, I purchased another body for Chad. (The dyed body was either too dark in some areas or did not absorb the dye in others.)

Chad's new body is on the left and the dyed/painted body is on the right. He also received a new red turtleneck sweater to replace the one I made using a black sock. The neck knob of the new body is wrapped with a strip of self-adherent bandage to increase the diameter of the knob and to keep the head securely attached to the body. (Some of the paint scraped off when I removed the snugly fitting shoes from the dyed/painted feet).

The new body came with one pair of feet and four pairs of hands with the fingers in different positions.

Chad's pants are on the body and the feet have been attached.

The complexion difference is noticeable in this closeup of the feet of the new body and the head, but who cares? The shoes will cover the feet.

In this picture, Chad's hands, shoes, and jacket have been added to complete his casual look. (I gave him the set of hands with the index fingers slightly pointing. The real Chadwick Boseman often pointed to people he was photographed with to place more emphasis on them than on himself, as seen here and here.)

In this final picture, he is flanked by two adoring dolls who remain on display with him.

What will I do with the other body? It will remain stored until a head with the same complexion surfaces.

Madame Alexander Play Wonder

Play Wonder 18-inch doll

This Target-exclusive 18-inch doll by Madame Alexander has the copyright year of 2011 on the head. I have several other 18-inch dolls by Alexander, but none, until now, with this head sculpt. The head is admittedly oversized, but I've wanted to add a doll that uses this face to my collection for a while. This one was offered on eBay for a very reasonable price in March of this year. 

 

She arrived wearing the striped blouson Madame Alexander-tagged dress that she continues to wear. The dress is obviously not original to this doll, but it was made for an 18-inch Alexander Girlz doll, according to the tag and copyright year of 2010. 

I removed the black pleather skirt that was worn underneath this dress and the black boots that the doll arrived wearing, opting to allow her to wear a pair of Ugg boots (borrowed from Brains and Beauty Malia). Malia has been redressed, so no worries about her feet being bare.

I used brown and tan wooden beads and copper wire to make her necklace and bracelet. The drop earrings were originally turquoise. I painted these tan to match the necklace and bracelet.

I restyled her rooted black wavy hair by twisting the front and sides and joining the two twists together in the back with a clear rubber band.

This doll's arrival prompted me to create an installation in DeeBeeGee's Virtual Black Doll Museum for 18-inch Madame Alexander Dolls to illustrate several of the different head sculpts and doll lines Alexander Dolls sold through their website and/or through other retailers.
