New Barbies are on the horizon to celebrate high-achieving women.
In the following video, Nicola Adams shares her enthusiasm for the Barbie made in her likeness.
See them all here. Will all be mass produced? That is an unanswered question. If more than one will be produced, will they be available in all markets? The ones that are available can be ordered/preordered here.

GO MATTEL! I hope these inspiring dolls are mass-marketed.
ReplyDeleteYes, Go Mattel!
DeleteI tried to order the Katherine Johnson Barbie today. Even though the buy page listed it as a preorder, at checkout, a message popped up that it was not available.

Some of the Shero dolls are being produced for public purchase. Ibtihaj Muhammad will be "out" this year per this news report. Model Ashley Graham was to have been produced last year. (I'm not sure if she was mass market produced. I recall Alas, many of the others in the Inspiring Women series may not be available to the public. My guess is that Mattel will see how well the first three dolls sell to determine whether to reproduce the others. Originally, Gabby Douglas was one of the one-of-a-kind Shero dolls. Collector requests got Mattel to produce the then one-of-a-kind doll for the public.
ReplyDeleteThanks, D7ana! That was my assumption that many of these will be one-of-a-kind unless demand/requests prompt mass production.
DeleteI believe the Gabby Douglas Barbie petition did help bring that doll to the market.

Yes, indeed! Thanks for creating and promoting that petition.

ReplyDeleteAck! Realized I'd left an incomplete sentence in my first reply so this comment was to correct and complete that one. Oh and thanks for sharing this information. I LOVE to read about Barbie and play scale dolls and/or action figures.
DeleteYou're welcome, D7ana! I write about a multitude of dolls because that's what I collect with a few Barbies and other playscale dolls included, but not often. I am an unapologetically, unfocused, incurable black-doll enthusiast.

Thanks for sharing this information! Katherine Johnson and Frida Kahlo are must-haves for me. I didn't know who Nicola Adams was prior to this, but now that I've seen the doll and know who she is, I want that doll as well. I'm trying to resist Amelia Earhart, but she may go on the list as well. I had previously slowed down on collecting a lot, but I'm super excited about this line! I love it that Mattel is producing dolls that represent real women!
ReplyDeleteI am keeping my fingers crossed that the Nicola Adams doll is produced in mass quantities, is available in the US, and that it is articulated. I have a strong suspicion that many of these will be OOAKs.

Great that Mattel makes sheros. π
ReplyDeleteBut I think that the boxer is a bit weak looking... Might she not have been better off with a Wonder Woman type body?
I'm not familiar with the Wonder Woman body, but you're right, she would be more realistic with muscular arms and legs.
