When I Fell in Love with Delia

Delia by Helen Kish, #2 of 25 in a 2007 photograph courtesy of Finders Keepers Consignment Online

It was in 2007 when I saw the all-porcelain, approximately 11-inch tall Delia by Helen Kish on eBay. I fell in love! I attempted to win the auction, but I was outbid. The next best thing was for me to contact the seller to ask permission to use the auction photo (shown above) in the book I was writing at the time. The seller complied and provided all the details about Delia that I needed to complete the entry on page 269 of Black Dolls a Comprehensive Guide to Celebrating, Collecting, and Experiencing the Passion. The auctioned Delia was #2 of 25 dolls worldwide!

Delia #1 of 25

Who knew that some 14 years later, another opportunity to own Delia would present itself to me, and who knew that I would actually acquire the doll? Yes! I did, and my Delia is #1 of 25 worldwide. Number 1, the very first one Kish made in 1988.

As a result of this acquisition, because of Delia's historical significance to me, and the fact that she is one of Helen Kish's first dark-skinned dolls, I have installed the doll in my virtual black doll museum where photos of my doll and pertinent information are included.

Am I a happy collector? Yes, absolutely, I am!

There are countless items to collect and write about. Black dolls chose me.
