Making a Wig for Barbie You Create Dolls

The Barbie You Create Kit dolls wear straight and Afro-textured wigs.

After making a wig cap for the Barbie You Create Kit dolls and determining that all three needed Afro-textured hair, I made an Afro wig. I used my saved hair (shed after washing and/or combing it) and hair saved over the last 18 months or so of my mother's life each time I washed and/or combed her hair. Our hair was stored in separate Ziploc bags. 

I retrieved the bags of hair, paper tape, Aleene's Tacky Glue, and scissors before beginning the wig-making process, following the steps outlined in my previous post to make a wig cap. Rose was my model.

Rose's Saran-wrapped and paper-taped head is illustrated in this photo and in the next.

 

Paper tape has become my new go-to for doll repairs.

 

With the head appropriately wrapped, several layers of Aleene's Tacky Glue were applied next.

After each layer of glue was applied, the doll's head rested on a doll stand to allow each layer to dry before applying the next.

Another layer of glue was applied and allowed to dry.

A third layer of glue was applied and allowed to dry.

 

After several layers of glue, the cap was firm enough to trim the excess plastic from the bottom edge. 

Wig cap #2 is ready for hair.

Rose tried the wig cap on after the excess plastic was trimmed.

Our hair was removed from Ziploc bags.

I began by gluing my hair on first because I only wanted the wig to have a patch of blonde.

Some black hair was added, and a line of glue was added before more hair was placed on the wig cap.

Black hair is glued all around. I left a space to add a patch of blonde hair.

Black and blonde hair cover the wig cap, and it rests on a doll stand to dry.

This is almost the final result; however, I added more black hair to fill out the sides and to cover some of the blonde area to prevent it from looking like a bald spot. 

After all the hair was added to the wig cap and allowed to dry, excessive hair strands were trimmed to create a perfectly round Afro. 

After adding white stud earrings, Rose modeled the wig in this picture and in the next.

The black and blonde wig matches her white-thread-trimmed black jacket.

In my fashion doll wig stash, I found a half loc'd wig handmade several years ago for a 1/6 BJD. I never liked the wig on the doll it was made for and kept it stored in a Barbie case. Caro (who gave the brown curly wig to Minh) tried this wig on.

The half-loc'd wig looks okay on Caro.

One side of this wig has locs; the other side gives the appearance of short-cropped hair.

Caro decided she'd wear the half loc'd wig occasionally but prefers Adele Makeda's Afro wig as illustrated next.

Rose, Minh, and Caro look fabulous in their Afro-textured wigs.

Making a Wig Cap for Barbie You Create Kit Dolls

These three wigs came with the Barbie You Create Kit No. 003.

The Barbie You Create Kits include three wigs. Kit No. 003 has two wigs with straight hair and one with Afro-textured hair. Because I wanted more hair versatility for my dolls, I looked in Barbie cases and browsed dolls on display for wigs that might fit these dolls. One of the dolls tried on an Integrity Toys Afro wig that came with Urban Antoinette Adèle Makéda. The wig looked fabulous on Minh, but the fit was loose. So, I made a wig cap to be worn underneath. Here's what was done:

I used Minh to create a wig cap after she tried on a black dress that did not come with the kit.

I covered Minh's head with Saran wrap and secured the plastic wrap with paper tape beginning at the nape of the neck.

Minh holds a roll of paper tape.

As illustrated above and in the next pictures, I applied several layers of paper tape over Minh's head from the top to just above the ears.

Several layers of paper tape have been wrapped around Minh's head in this picture and in the next three.

The next step involved painting several layers of Aleene's Tacky Glue over the taped area.

This short video illustrates and describes the glue application.

Minh's dress was removed during the glue application.

The wig cap was easily removed from Minh's head.

Cutting off the excess plastic from the bottom edge of the wig cap was the next step.

The plastic has been trimmed from the wig cap.

Minh redressed and tried on the wig cap.

It fits perfectly.

Minh and the other kit dolls tried on the wig cap underneath Adele's Afro wig to see which doll the wig complemented the best. 

Still wearing her new dress, Minh tried the wig on first.

It looks great on her!

Rose was the next wig model...

...followed by Caro, and we all agreed that she wears it best.

The other two wear wigs from the Barbie kit.

In this final close-up, Rose and Minh wear the kit wigs. Caro wears Adele's wig (with the wig cap underneath).

From the last two pictures of the wigged dolls (one with straight hair and two with Afro-textured hair), I decided all three dolls needed Afro-textured hair, and my next project commenced. Stay tuned.

LeBron James Kenbassadors Doll

This shipping box for Mattel Item Number HRM33-9993 holds a doll coveted by many.

Acquiring the LeBron James Kenbassadors Doll was almost like finding a needle in a haystack. At two different websites on the evening of release (04/14/2025), I 1) had the doll carted, and I "stood in line" for four minutes before MattelCreations blasted the SOLD OUT insult across the screen; and 2) I hurried over to Target where the site indicated I could cart the doll; I did, which was followed by a second insult that the doll was not available to order online and that it was not yet available at my local Target store. I felt defeated, but never to be pressed to order at more than retail any newly released doll, I resigned myself to the fact that I'd wait until the doll was either on Amazon or Walmart at retail for however long that would take. 

Later, in the afternoon of 04/15/2025, someone posted on Facebook that the doll was available to order at FAO Schwarz. I shared the link with others before placing my own order, which appeared to go through successfully, but FAO notified me on 04/16/2025 that some items in my order had been refunded. (I ordered two other items from FAO to qualify for free shipping. I am one of those people who hate paying shipping, who will add other items to their cart, and in essence, spend more money,  to save on shipping.)

Because I had contacted FAO's customer service the day of my order to ask if I could use a new-customer coupon code that I failed to enter at checkout, (which was granted but only on the other two items and not on the LeBron James doll), I received the following personal email from the same person who granted the use of the coupon:

Hello Debbie,

I just wanted to let you know that unfortunately we had to cancel the Lebron barbie off your order, as our warehouse was unable to fulfill this item. When they went to fulfill your order the Lebron barbie was completely sold out, this item sold through very quickly. I am so sorry for the inconvenience.

I have also processed the welcome discount for you. You should receive a separate confirmation email of that refund.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to assist you. Have a wonderful day!

I appreciated G.'s kind note, her apology, the reassurance that the coupon was granted, and that I would receive a refund for the doll, but I-still-wanted-the-doll.

Everything worked out as intended for me because I received the LeBron James Kenbassadors Doll from a dear doll friend as an early birthday gift. Woo hoo! I am deeply indebted to said dear doll friend and feel extremely blessed and highly favored. 

Several pictures of this spectacular doll are included in yesterday's DeeBeeGee's Virtual Black Doll Museum installation, and I set aside the following few for this post.

The doll's box was wrapped in white tissue paper inside the shipper. Some of the tissue paper rubbed against the inside of the box and tore as I gingerly pulled the box out of the shipper.

In all its splendor, this is a full-length view of this remarkable doll.

I'm not a sports fan or a LeBron James fan, but I wanted this doll icon in my collection. It is the first doll in the Kenbassadors series, which, as the back of the box indicates, "celebrates influential Ken figures who are creating positive change and contributing to a better world for all." 

The back of the box includes a headshot of LeBron James and glowing biographical text about the sports icon and the legacy he is building to champion others both on and off the court.

The doll captures LeBron James' likeness as illustrated by this close-up headshot of the doll.

An image of the LeBron James Family Foundation circular emblem is included on the front and back of the box. James is definitely doing great things on and off the court, and Mattel has created a spectacular tribute to the man. My only wish is that this Barbie Signature Black Label doll (to be produced in unlimited quantities) were readily available to all who desire it at the retail price and not doled out a few quantities at a time to increase the already existing demand for it. Do better, Mattel, and stop playing in our faces.
