Can someone explain to me why this doll is not male?  Is it inspired by Jean-Michel Basquiat, a male artist who rose to fame during the 1980s or is it supposed to represent him?  Even though I love the doll, I'm scratching my head about the doll's gender.

Read more about Jean-Michel Basquiat, the artist, here.

  1. It might be a doll inspired by him ... I think. I'm not too sure ever.

  2. It is like the Andy Warhol Barbie, inspired by the artist and work, but still Barbie.

    1. I had forgotten about the Andy Warhol Barbie dressed in a Campbell's soup can. The unveiling of the Basquiat Barbie crushed my hope that the doll would be male and actually represent the artist.

  4. This brings to mind the Karl Lagerfeld doll. It was a Barbie dressed like the iconic designer. But I agree with you.... why not a Basquiat Ken doll. We need more Ken dolls of color and he would make a really nice one!
