Martha Chase Exhibition

An installation photo of The Martha Chase: Progressive Kindness exhibit

The Martha Chase: Progressive Kindness exhibit opened on January 27, 2024. The exhibit will run through July 30, 2024, at the Barry Art Museum at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

I received installation photos from Barry Art Museum Executive Director Charlotte Potter Kasic.

A Martha Chase doll is examined and photographed during the installation.

Ms. Kasic also kindly sent me a museum guide to the exhibit. A section of the guide reads,

"Martha Chase, "a product of the Progressive Era (1896-1917)... invented sanitary dolls to be soft and durable, with an impermeable surface that was easy to clean and disinfect...They were used to teach mothers and young girls to handle, feed, bathe, diaper, and dress babies."

A Scanned Guide Page

As illustrated above, the guide includes a headshot of my circa 1950s Martha Chase stockinette doll, and an image of the July 27, 1997-released postage stamp honoring American-made dolls. The doll stamp includes a Chase stockinette doll dressed in yellow and an Ella Smith "Alabama Baby."

Many thanks to both Artist and Curator-at-large Brett Windham and Charlotte Potter Kasic for allowing me to assist in the educational materials for the exhibit.
