Barbie You Create Barbie Basics Neutral Kit 002-Unboxed Review

This is a continuation of my review of the two Barbie You Create Barbie Basics Neutral Kits that I purchased. The link to my review of Kit 001 is at the end of this post. 

The Tango head was attached to the Made to Move Athletic Barbie body that comes with the kit.

As with the other kits in this series, the back of the box and a tri-fold insert inside the box illustrate ways to style the doll.

This photo was taken before the doll and the packaged accessories were removed from the box.

Freed from the confines of the box, Tango posed for the camera after I fluffed out and shaped her auburn and brown curls with my fingers. 

Tango wears a metallic gold puff-sleeve top, a "B" monogrammed wrap skirt, and tan flat ankle strap shoes. 
The contents of the three black envelopes are illustrated next.

The Pazette and Elle sculpts were in the top envelope. Again, I had to work with the hair to make it presentable.

A tan spandex maxi skirt with a faux leather panel and a brown long-sleeved spandex blouse were in the second envelope.

The third envelope included a pair of plastic, white square earrings; several plastic hair clips, a pair of white pointed-toe mules with "B" monogrammed heels, a pair of rectangular white shades, a headband, a gold-tone cuff bracelet, and the base and waist clip of the doll stand. The doll stand pole was attached to the box liner alongside Tango.

I placed the sunglasses and earrings on Tango before swapping this head with the Pazette head.

With the Pazette head on, I removed the white puffed-sleeved top and added the brown spandex top for her to wear with the wrap skirt and shoes. The headband and the earrings were also added.

After getting her hair detangled, Elle tried on the puff-sleeve top with the maxi skirt. All dolls modeled the same tan shoes because, unfortunately, the white "B" monogrammed shoes in this kit do not fit well.

This is how the white mules in Kit 002 fit the dolls in both kits. The Kit 001 foot is on the left; Kit 002 is on the right. It will require an elastic band to hold the shoes on the doll's feet, and even with that, they are prone to falling off Kit 002's shorter foot!

I wanted to see if the shoes in Kit 001 would fit Kit 002 doll's feet. The ankle strap position is off.

So, in both kits. There is only one pair of footwear that will fit these dolls, the boots in Kit 001 and the tan flats in Kit 002.

My Pros and Cons for this Kit mirror those for Kit 001 with some additions.
Pros

• I appreciate the three different head sculpts, one of which (Tango) is not used often on dolls with this complexion.
• I am thrilled that two of the three kits in this collection have brown complexions. Thank you, Mattel.
• I love Tango's natural coils and the color of the hair.
• I like Elle's hairstyle, but... (see the 4th con below).
• Head removal and placement are easy.
• The interchangeability and creativity are pluses.
• The ability to create different looks using this kit with Kit 001 is another plus.
• One pair of shoes fits well.
• The neutral palette is appealing.
• The clothes in this kit are more stylish than those in Kit 001.
• The clothes fit well.
• The headband is more flexible and fits better than the one in Kit 001.
• Although they are plastic, the earrings in this kit have a better design than those in Kit 001, and they fit better without jutting out. 

Cons

• As mentioned and illustrated above, the white mules are not a good fit for Kit 001 or Kit 002.
• The plastic hair clips are useless to me. 
• The cuff bracelet is so oddly shaped with a narrow opening that I could not place it on either kit doll's wrist. So, it's useless, too.
• Elle has layered hair with multiple double-strand twists on top of loose, wavy hair with more twists underneath the wavy section. The twists and the wavy hair were tangled upon arrival. This hair mixture will easily tangle and should only be finger-combed. 
• Pazette's hair is gelled on top (not really a con, but this is worth noting). The ends looked rough, were uneven and required trimming.
• (This is just an observation, but it would be a con if I had purchased Kit 003: the clothes in that kit are frumpy! I'm so glad they were not included in Kits 001 or 002.)
• Creating three complete dolls will require buying three extra bodies that match the complexion of the heads in this kit. 

I didn't do a deep dive into body complexion matching because again, I have no immediate plans to buy more bodies for the extra heads in each kit, but I did compare this body's complexion with two dolls, as illustrated next.

The twinning Elles (the doll from Kit 2 and Barbie Looks Model #2) share the same complexion.

Elle and Barbie Looks #21 share a similar, if not the same, complexion.

Finally, I attached each head to the body and dressed each doll in different combinations of the fashions and accessories and took the following full-length and close-up photos.

And here they are in a close-up.

Initially, I thought Tango would be my favorite, and I do love her head sculpt and hair, but there is something about Elle (probably the hair, even though it will tangle easily) that I love more.

Elle is the "it" girl in this kit.

To summarize, do I like both kits? Yes. Would I love for Mattel to produce a line of doll heads and bodies with different complexions, hair styles, and hair textures that can be mixed and matched and each piece sold separately, from which collectors can pick and build dolls of their choice? Absolutely, just make and sell separately packaged heads, bodies, clothes, and accessories.

This style neck connector is used for the Barbie kit dolls.

A better idea is that, going forward, Mattel could use the kit doll neck connector on all future collector dolls so that heads can be easily swapped. I'm always afraid I will damage the traditional-style neck connector (like the one on the right in this image) if I remove a head. The kit dolls' long flat neck connector makes head removal a "snap."

This lovely doll, which features the closed-mouth Brooklyn sculpt, celebrates Mattel's 80th Anniversary, not Barbie's 80th anniversary (Barbie has only been around since 1959). She's available at the Mattel Creations website and on Amazon.com (where you can enjoy free shipping with or without Amazon Prime).

Barbie Fashionista #221

Barbie Fashionista #221

I purchased two Barbie Fashionistas #221 from Amazon in early April. The dolls have been here for a few weeks. I opened the shipping box yesterday. I am glad I ordered two—one to debox and one to keep in the box. The one I removed from the box is on the left in the above photo. Her hair was all over her head as illustrated above and in the next photo. 

Barbie Fashionista #221 has a rooted black Afro, brown-painted eyes, painted-red lips and painted teeth. The doll on the left had an awful rooting job, awful! Whoever passed this doll's quality inspection, if there was one, must have been asleep on the job or they just did not care.

I don't usually like Barbies with painted teeth like this, because they often look buck-toothed. This one doesn't have the buck-toothed look. 

This is another in-the-box photo taken from a slightly different angle.

#1 Black Barbie is illustrated on the lower right of the box lining. Underneath the doll's illustration are the words, Barbie / 65 / inspiring stories/ Shaping the future.

Barbie Fashionista #221 is illustrated on the box side panel with other Fashionistas from #194 to #227 in non-numerical order.

Out-of-the-Box Videos and Photos

As described, I was very disappointed in one of the doll's hair. It was longer in some areas and very short in others as illustrated in the 1st video below.

I can't believe someone thought it was okay to sell the doll with hair so poorly styled. I trimmed the longer ends and evened it all around before recording the next video. 

She posed for a few more photos. 

After cutting and patting her Afro into shape, her ears were pierced with red quilting needles that serve as ear studs.

Barbie Fashionista #221 uses the Mbili face sculpt. Specifically, she features the updated 2011 Playline Grace/Mbili version of the sculpt.

 She wears an ensemble that pays homage to the 1st Black Barbie: a shimmery red short dress with cold-shoulder sleeves, a plastic gold choker, and red high-heel shoes. 

Black Barbie Fashionistas #221 poses with a cut-out of the box tribute to the 1st Black Barbie.

I cut out the box tribute to the 1st Black Barbie and temporarily attached it to Fashionista #221's dress with double-sided tape. With her hair trimmed and styled and her ears pierced, She's Black! She's Beautiful! She's Dynamite!

Update: 6/15/2024: The doll sold out almost immediately on Amazon a few weeks ago. It is now back in stock and can be ordered here.

65th Anniversary Barbie

Two shipping boxes contain Barbie 65th Blue Sapphire Anniversary Dolls - Brunette

I ordered three 65th Blue Sapphire Anniversary Barbies but canceled one order before it shipped.

The two I ordered arrived during the week of March 10, 2024. I've removed one doll from the shipping carton to photograph for this post. The other is reserved for something else.

The full-length black and white swirl and black and white striped gown pays homage to #1 Barbie's iconic black and white swimsuit.

The doll's beautiful brown hair is styled in double-strand twists with painted "baby hair" that frames the face.

I did not want to miss an opportunity to own this stunning doll. So, I ordered from Mattel Creations in the early a.m. on March 6, 2024.

A day or two after ordering this doll from Mattel Creations, I ordered another one from Amazon after their buy page became active. On the same day, I ordered yet another doll from Walmart. I planned to cancel the Mattel Creations order because I had to pay $9.99 to become a Barbie Signature member to order it from their site. Mattel shipped the doll before I could cancel that order. So, I canceled the Walmart order instead.

The 65th Blue Sapphire Anniversary Barbie is from the Black Label Barbie Signature Collection. The doll is described on the back of the box as better illustrated in the next picture. The description is also typed below the picture.

I have two other manufactured black Barbies that pay homage to #1 Barbie: 60th Anniversary Barbie released in 2019 (box date of 2018) and the 50th Anniversary 1959 Debut Barbie doll released in 2009 (box date 2008).

I photographed all three together.

65th Anniversary Barbie

Preordering for the lovely 65th Anniversary African American Barbie commenced at the Mattel Creations website on 03/05/24 at 9 p.m. PST. I preordered at around 5 a.m. on 3/6/24 without any problems. The website reportedly jammed due to high traffic when ordering commenced. 

The doll retails for $60 plus tax and shipping. My order is scheduled to ship by June 19, 2024. The downside of ordering from Mattel Creations is that I had to become a Mattel Creations (MC) member for an additional $9 to order from their site. 

My preference was to order from Amazon to eliminate the extra $9 MC club membership and shipping, but I went ahead and secured the doll from Mattel. The Amazon buy page is "live," but preordering is not available at this time (3/6/24 10 a.m. CST). Keep visiting the Amazon link below if you'd like to eliminate MC's club fee and shipping.

Preordering was available at Walmart's website earlier today, but the doll is sold out there at this time (3/6/24 10:00 a.m.) Here is the Walmart buy page to check back for replenished stock.

Black Barbie Documentary Coming to Netflix

"Netflix and Shondaland (Shonda Rhimes) have acquired worldwide rights to 'Black Barbie,' a documentary that dives into the history of the first Black Barbie doll — which debuted in 1980... and three Black women at Mattel who advocated for the toy."

Black Barbie debuted in 1980, 21 years after (white) Barbie's March 9, 1959, introduction at the American International Toy Fair in New York.

Bessie Coleman Barbie IRL

Mattel Shipper for the Bessie Coleman Barbie, stock #HJX37-9993

I've taken a couple of photos of my Bessie Coleman Barbie from the Barbie Inspiring Women series after removing it from the Mattel shipper. (Thank you Amazon for leaving the doll's box in the original shipper and for shipping it inside another box with air packing material!) I'll take more photos later to use in the doll's museum installation. 

The doll uses the Desiree/Adria head sculpt.

This full-length photo illustrates the doll's 1920s-inspired aviator suit with the initials BC on the cap.

I tried to scan the entire back of the box, but the scanner interestingly only picked up the image of Ms. Coleman, which is illustrated next.

Robyn from Barbie Life in the City

Robyn is a character in the Barbie Life in the City series.

Ebony-complexioned Robyn comes with a café kiosk with shelves and accessories. 

Robyn has a non-articulated petite body, brown painted eyes, rooted brown natural textured hair with auburn highlights, and paint-on black baby hair. She wears a pink fruit-print top with a pink skirt, and turquoise slip-on sandals.

The playset includes a kiosk with shelving, a reversible "open" and "closed" sign, a cash register screen, and a service counter. A cup of coffee, a pretzel, a muffin, and a croissant are also included. Robyn also has a leashed puppy.

Before she arrived, based on the prototype photos, I thought Robyn shared the same head sculpt as Brooklyn Barbie, but their sculpts are different. Robyn's head is marked ©2021 MATTEL. So she is relatively new. I am not sure if Mattel has used this sculpt before, but her face looks familiar. The toothy grin is a bit bothersome, but I can live with it until I decide to give her a closed mouth with acrylic paint. 

In the final picture, Robyn sits with Barbie Looks Model #10 for a complexion comparison.

Their complexions appear to be about the same.

 I pierced Robyn's ears with quilting needles, which are used as stud earrings.
