Black Dolls by Contemporary Black Doll Artists

In May 2023, I conducted a presentation for the Motor City Doll Club of which I am an associate member. The title of the presentation is Black Dolls by Contemporary Black Doll Artists. It was conducted as a PowerPoint slideshow for the club. It is now converted to an MP4 video that I am sharing with the doll-collecting community at large on YouTube, on this blog, and it will be featured in a future modern-doll installation in DeeBeeGee's Virtual Black Doll Museum.

Enjoy!

School Dazed Lizette Dionne

On Saturday, March 23, 2013, the Motor City Doll Club (Detroit, Michigan), held a luncheon to benefit the Horizons-Upward Bound (HUB) Program of Cranbrook Schools located in Bloomfield Hills, MI.

According to their website, "The mission of the Horizons-Upward Bound (HUB) program is to prepare students who have limited opportunities from the Detroit Metropolitan area to enter and succeed in post-secondary education. We academically support the efforts of the students’ home school by providing services that assist students in pursuing and achieving their dreams and goals for their academic endeavors and beyond."

School Dazed Lizette Dionne was one of the souvenir dolls from the MCDC luncheon.  As an absentee attendee, my souvenir Lizette arrived last week.

School Dazed Lizette, souvenir doll from MCDC luncheon, March 23, 2013, sitting pretty.

Lizette's English-style schoolgirl uniform of navy blue blazer piped in green, long-sleeved white shirt, white vest, navy blue bow tie, belted blue/green plaid pleated skirt, white over-the-knee socks accented with a navy blue side bow, and black closed toe high-heel shoes is very appropriate for the luncheon theme: Education is the Key to Our Future.

Upon arrival, School Dazed Lizette received a warm Texas welcome from Essential Lizette Dionne who arrived in January 2012.

School Dazed Lizette is joined by Essential Lizette

Both dolls are articulated at the elbows, wrists, and knees.  Both are also wigged, but Essential Lizette’s wig is removable. Another obvious difference is the lighter complexion of the event doll, whose eyes are inset in comparison to the painted eyes of Essential Lizette.

Both dolls are very lovely.
