Pamela Be My BFF XL Family

This is a follow-up to my post about the Steffi Love XL Family dolls. As it turns out, the doll set my brother purchased for me from Ollie's, that I thought was Steffi Love XL Family, is actually Pamela Be My BFF XL Family. Simba Toys obviously made different versions of the XL Family and named one set Steffi Love and the other Pamela Be my BFF.

The box is undated. So, it is difficult to determine the year the Pamela set was manufactured by the German toy manufacturer, Simba Toys. Based on the condition of the box, which includes shelfwear, the Pamela set might be older than the Steffi Love version. A portion of the top layer of the box top is missing, and there is a dent in the plastic covering— which my brother pointed out, "It was like that at the store." (In other words, he didn't do it.) None of this matters to me because all I wanted was an XL Family of four dolls—father, mother, son, and daughter. The different name and minor box imperfections are irrelevant.

The package size is rather unique. The box almost comes to my waist and measures about 39 inches tall. I don't know why I was somewhat shocked about the box's height when my brother handed the box to me. It has to be at least this tall to accommodate a family of two 11-1/2-inch dolls and two approximately 4-1/2-inch dolls that are positioned one above the other.

The following individual photos provide a closer look at each family member.

Pamela (mom) wears a pink, blue, and white floral-print dress with dark pink high-heel strappy shoes. She has brown straight hair and brown-painted eyes. Pamela wears nude lip color.

The daughter has straight brown hair and brown-painted eyes. She wears a cherry-print white dress and dark pink sandals.

The son has dark brown molded hair and brown painted eyes. He is dressed in a blue and white striped top with attached dark blue and white pants and white vinyl sneakers. 

Dad wears a white T-shirt, khaki pants, and brown shoes. Like his son, he has dark brown molded hair and brown painted eyes.

Ollie's price tag includes the retail price.

The Ollie's price was $15.99. The sticker price indicates a retail cost of $19.99. Incidentally, Stacy Bailey-Ndiaye (who shared photos of her dolls for the previous post) paid $19.99 for her Steffi Love XL Family at a Love's Travel Stop (a gas station).

I am happy to now have Pamela Be My BFF XL Family and even happier that this doll set is no longer on my wish list.

Steffi Love Dentist

Steffi Love Dentist

A member of my Facebook group offered to purchase Steffi Love Dentist for me from Ollie's in her area. We have an Ollie's store here, but it is quite a distance from where I live. It was easier for me to have someone purchase the doll for me. I didn't mind paying for shipping.

Steffi Love, made by Simba Toys of Germany is a Barbie competitor. Very few Black Steffi Love dolls are made, which is one of the two reasons I wanted to add this doll to my collection. Being a Barbie competitor is the other reason. This doll is my second Steffi Love. The first one was found at a thrift store a few years ago. Read about the first one at the link at the end of this post.

The spreadsheet description provides this doll's details.

11-1/2-inch vinyl doll (with very thin, straight, non-poseable legs); dressed as a dentist, wears a white vinyl facemask, a white dentist's jacket, pink tooth-print sleeveless dress, and pink high-heel shoes. The doll has light brown waist-length straight hair and painted hazel eyes. Includes a little boy patient seated in an adjustable dental chair that has an attached adjustable lamp and an attached faucet. The boy wears an aqua short-sleeved shirt with a "brushing tooth" on the front, tan shorts, and turquoise vinyl sneakers. He has straight, combed-back molded black hair and painted brown eyes. He has a smiling mouth with painted upper and lower teeth and pink lip color. Besides the dental chair, there are two silver vinyl dental picks, a mouth mirror that Steffi holds, a vinyl turquoise toothbrush, a pink vinyl toothpaste tube, and a turquoise vinyl cup.

The close-up offers a slightly better view of the dolls and accessories on the top left.

The little patient seems very happy about his visit to the dentist,
 but he possibly has a crush on Dentist Steffi.

The back of the box illustrates the White version. The thinness of the non-poseable legs is illustrated.

With Steffi still attached to the box liner and the liner removed from the box, I removed her facemask to take the next two pictures.

Steffi Love has a very pretty face.

The little boy is handsome, too. The mouth mirror that Steffi holds and the chair faucet are  better visible in this photo.

Steffi Love

Steffi Love has a very pretty face.

I stopped by the thrift store yesterday and found this circa 1990s doll, Steffi Love.  She was only $2.99 and within her baggie, appeared to be in decent condition with articulation.  So I purchased her.

Before now I was not familiar with this 11-inch line of fashion dolls, made by Simba.  I did a quick Internet search and found several white versions with the same face.    The newer versions have a different head sculpt and also do not appear articulated.  A male counterpart, Kevin, is shown at the Steffi Love website.  I did not see any dark skinned dolls there. 
 
My doll, as mentioned is 11-inches tall.  She is articulated at the elbows, waist, knees, ankles, and the usual areas:  neck, upper arms-to-shoulders, upper legs-to-hips.  Wrist articulation is absent.  Her head is marked:  SIMBA-TOYS

Her black hair is rooted in approximately four layers.  The eyes are painted brown.   Her feet are flat.  The dress she wore when found appears original.

Made in China, the quality is decent, above that of dollar store dolls, but not as high as a Mattel-made doll.  Her arms and lower legs are a lighter brown than the rest of her body.

Because of her flat feet, I thought about LIV shoes and clothing.  Her feet are smaller than LIV feet, but the outfit I chose for her includes boots, which fit without obvious slack.  Her shoulder/breast areas are broader than LIV dolls making it difficult to close the upper back of the LIV blouse completely and the denim vest will not close in front.  Fortunately, the fashion looks good with or without the vest.

Steffi has removed the vest and feels and looks more comfortable without it.

She's all set and for $2.99, I am glad I did not leave Steffi Love behind.
