Elin's Wigs and Her Twin

Before knowing there would be a complexion discrepancy, in preparation for my new 1/6 BJD, Elin's arrival, and in addition to the dress, socks, shoes, and undies that I ordered or won on eBay for her, I ordered two size 7 wigs made for 1/6 BJD/SDs.  These add to the other wigs she can borrow from other dolls.

One of the wigs, shown above, is wavy and too long for a doll this size. I wanted to tightened up the waves a bit and tame the ends so I trimmed, braided and boiled it. The plan was to have tighter curls after the wig dried and the braids were removed.

Braided wavy wig...
...was immersed in a cup of boiled water for about a minute.

Still not pleased with the end result, I trimmed the ends more and created two side ponytails. Elin #2 (the doll with the complexion that Elin #1 was supposed to have) laid claim to the new wig.  See her next wearing the permed wig before getting fully dressed.

The seller sent an auburn short pageboy wig along with Elin #2 which is too close to her complexion.  Elin #1 will enjoy wearing it when not wearing the Afro wig she prefers.  Both girls do model the auburn wig later in this post.

As agreed upon, the seller sent a dress for Elin #2 (shown in next photos) as well as a silicone wig cap and the auburn wig, mentioned above.   This was very generous of her since I only asked for a dress to compensate for the incorrect color of the first doll (and a discounted price on the second).

The girls took photos individually and together wearing and sharing wigs, which are shown below.

L-R:  Elin #2 wears the dress the seller sent for her and the boil permed wig.  The auburn wig seller sent is worn by Elin #1

Wearing same wigs as shown in the previous photo, this pose was too sweet not to share.

Elin #1 returns to her Afro wig.

Elin #2 wears a dark brown loosely braided wig that was ordered with the permed wig.

More wig swapping in this final photo where Elin #2 wears the Afro wig (that she decided to keep) and Elin #1 wears the wavy ponytails.

It is amazing that the seller's dress selection for Elin #2 is a perfect complement for Elin #1's navy blue coat dress.  Except for their complexions, these two sweet-faced girls are twins, but they prefer not to dress alike.

I keep finding and buying...

Found at thrift store, ©2008 Chic doll

...these copyright 2008 Chic dolls.  This is the second one with this complexion that I have found at the local thrift store.  One with a darker complexion was found first and another like this newest-one-to-me was found next.

All three have the same head sculpt.  The one on the far right has the deepest complexion.

Bushy hair in need of taming
Because of her coarse, slightly unruly, poor quality hair, I gave this one a boil perm after saturating the hair with mousse and rolling it using pipe cleaners cut into several, approximately 2-inch pieces.

Hair has been rolled and ready to be dipped into a cup of boiled water for a few seconds.

I used mousse because wetting the hair alone would not give the hair the necessary slip to smooth it out and help the pipe cleaners remain in place.

After dipping the head into a cup of boiled water, the pipe cleaners remained in place for 24 hours while the hair air dried.

Pipe cleaners have been removed.  Finger combing was done next.

Hair has been finger combed and doll dressed in a Sparkle Girlz fashion.

Because of her super thin body, I dressed her in a Sparkle Girlz fashion, the shorts of which are a little large.  Her new companion, who has now been dressed, loves her new look.

Chic Boutique doll poses with new beau, who has been identified as a Super Star Ken Clone or KC.  KC wears Cali Guy Steven's fashion (who is now Happy Family Birthday Grandpa.  Remember him?).

Kayla's New 'Do

Fashion Fever Kayla's head on Alexis LIV's body wears Limbe Dolls lingerie.

In addition to needing new clothing after she allowed Prettie Girls Lena to wear the Stardolls for Barbie fashion that she had been wearing, Kayla needed her hair restyled.

Kayla illustrates her thick, unruly mane.

Kayla's hair has always been very unruly.  I have tried restyling it after giving her a boil perm, but it failed to hold the curls.  I decided to do another boil perm by first doing double-strand twists and rolling these onto end paper-wrapped pipe cleaners before dipping her head into a cup of boiled water followed by a dip into a cup of cold water.

Kayla's hair was saturated with water before double-strand twisting and rolling was done.  Wet hair is easier to grip and roll.
One of Kayla's double-strand twists before rolling onto an end paper-wrapped pipe cleaner is illustrated above.
I removed the head from the body prior to dipping it into a cup of boiled water.

Before dipping the head, I decided to remove it from the body after noticing there was too much side-to-side movement.  This was caused by the neck knob of her new LIV body not providing a perfect fit.  I closed in the gap between the neck and the knob by wrapping braided cord underneath the knob, similar to the fix used for the Janay head on the SIS Kara body (seen here.)

This out-of-focus picture illustrates my technique of wrapping braided cord underneath the neck knob to close in the gap between the knob and the neck.  The excess cord is trimmed with the end tucked into the neck.

Rollers out, finger combing next

With the rollers out, Kayla's hair was finger combed.  This achieved a huge curly 'fro, as illustrated below.

Kayla has been redressed in LIV Alexis' original fashion, which is very becoming on her.  I made the gold dangle earrings she wears after first piercing her ears.

Kayla is ready for prime time now... I love her new look!
Kayla is even more beautiful now and reminds me so much of a girl who attended my high school, Sabrina (whose last name escapes me).  Sabrina was a year my junior.  She wore her hair in a huge Afro and was voted most beautiful during her junior year by her predominantly white classmates.  I did not know her personally, but from what I saw of her, she possessed the ultimate beauty -- from the inside out.   Even though she's just a doll, Kayla has always had the same inner and outer beauty but even more so now.

Kayla's boil perm was inspired by the My Froggy Stuff video, "How to Curl a Doll's Hair."  As seen in the video below, I never dip a doll's head into a pan of boiling water.  I always boil water in a tea kettle and pour just enough of it into a coffee cup or mug before the head is submerged. Instead of single twisting, also seen in the video, I double-strand twisted Kayla's hair before rolling.
