Early 1900s Composition Doll Discovery

Legs and feet of two very rare early 1900s black composition dolls

On May 18, 2025, I was contacted by a textile conservator seeking information about two quite rare antique black dolls. I offered what little information I knew about one of the dolls' makers, but I had no idea the other doll existed. Giddy about my newfound knowledge of both dolls and eager to share it with the doll community, I gained permission from the organization that owns the dolls to document them in separate installations within DeeBeeGee's Virtual Black Doll Museum.

VBDM Milestone

DeeBeeGee’s Virtual Black Doll Museum™ endeavors to preserve Black-doll history by documenting historically significant and noteworthy contemporary Black dolls. The goal is to curate and install 1000 antique-to-modern black dolls. The museum was founded on January 17, 2021.

Based on the above screen capture of the museum's post statistics, the installation published on Friday, July 5, 2024, is the 700th. Note that some installations contain more than one doll; more than 700 dolls are already installed. I remain steadfast in installing 1000 antique-to-modern historically significant and aesthetically accurate black dolls.

I sold an extra copy of the Spring 2021 issue of UFDC's Doll News.

I received the following message through eBay from a buyer of one of my listings shortly after the purchase and before the item shipped.

Debbie, my fellow lover of, and passionate collector of Black dolls! I have known of you and your passion for Black dolls for years, decades, actually. When I just happened to run across this listing and saw that the magazine contains a Black Doll Museum article, my interest was immediately piqued. Then, after picking up on a few cues from your listing, I realized who you were as the seller of the magazine. I had no idea you were on eBay, but I was pleasantly surprised and quite amused by your user id, which is the same as mine except for the first 3 letters; I thought, "What a nice coincidence!" (Great minds think alike :o))

Anyway, I'm happy to be buying this magazine from THE Debbie B Garrett, creator and curator of The Virtual Black Doll Museum. I am hoping to retire from my job in a couple of years, at which point, I too, would love to devote my time to publishing a few coffee table books, as well as creating my own virtual museum of my decades-long collection of high-end Black dolls (modern, only). At that time, hopefully you wouldn't mind me contacting you for some of your suggestions and invaluable expertise.

"Establishing and Curating a Virtual Black Doll Museum"

DeeBeeGee's Virtual Black Doll Museum is featured in a 10-page article in The Official Journal of the United Federation of Doll Clubs Doll News Spring 2021 edition. The article includes examples of the doll categories that are curated and installed in the museum -- antique, vintage, modern, and one-of-a-kind Black dolls. 

This 160-page, full-color issue of Doll News also includes the article, "A Passion for Black Bride Dolls" by Jackie Harpp, which shares what fueled Harpp's love for Black Bride dolls and collectibles.

An article on the Jackie Robinson doll and other Black dolls are included in other articles in this issue.

Collectors of Dianna Effner dolls will enjoy the tribute to Effner that begins on page 130 of this issue.

Dianna Effner's Peggy Sue was the UFDC's Fabulous Fifties convention souvenir doll from their "On Time on Line" celebration held in July 2020.

I am an associate (out-of-state) member of  Motor City Doll Club, which is a UFDC-affiliated club based in Detroit, Michigan. Due to the pandemic, I have had the pleasure of attending the club's monthly meetings via Zoom. Each meeting includes a doll presentation by one of the members. I was the presenter in January. Several other UFDC clubs were invited to attend the presentation including Barbara Stone, the current UFDC president.

My presentation was a narrated slideshow presentation of DeeBeeGee's Virtual Black Doll Museum. At the conclusion of the presentation, Barbara Stone asked if I would write an article for UFDC's Doll News about the museum. I agreed and followed through. That article is the aforementioned published article.

Presenting DeeBeeGee's Virtual Black Doll Museum

Antique, vintage, modern, and one-of-a-kind black dolls

On January 17, 2021, via Zoom, I conducted a PowerPoint narrated slideshow presentation for Motor City Doll Club of my new Black-doll engagement, DeeBeeGee's Virtual Black Doll Museum™. DeeBeeGee’s Virtual Black Doll Museum™ endeavors to preserve the history of black dolls and to document past, current, and future black dolls. 

This online museum, which is open 24/7 curates antique, vintage, modern, and one-of-a-kind black dolls through photographs, detailed descriptions, links to additional references, and videos. 

Currently, 97 dolls have been curated and installed. The goal is to curate 1000 dolls from my personal collection and from the collections of fellow collectors.

Find out how to have your doll curated by sending an email to virtualblackdollmuseum@gmail.com, but for now, visit the site and add your email address to the Follow This Blog field (in the footer of any page or post) to be updated on new installations.
