Barbie's World: New Lars and New Basics

Byron Lars Mackenzie Fenella Layla™ Barbie® Doll
Mattel Stock Photo
The newest doll designed by Byron Lars has as many names as patterns in her interesting fashion.  Its dizzying effect includes stripes, plaids, animal print, argyle, and what appears to be the British flag lining the hood of her cape.  Why not throw in the flag?  It seems to be working for her.  This multicultural doll is available now at Barbiecollector.com for $100.

The multiarticulated Barbie Basics Collection 2.5 is also available at Barbiecollector.com as well as their fashion packs for $19.95 and $14.95, respectively.

The 2011 Holiday Barbie is also available at Barbiecollector.com for $39.95.

  1. I'd love to see what her hair is like and if here clothes can come apart. Together it looks pretty crazy but I'd love it if the individual pieces can be used....

  2. Hi Dani,

She has a short cropped hairstyle. It would be nice if her clothing can be removed. Chances are that they are sewn on. His last doll, Charmaine King, has molded-on gloves made of a foam-type materal.

  3. The design is all over the place for me. I may wait for a sale and also to see if the pieces can be used individually. I have used Sugar's pieces separately after adding some snaps :O)

  4. I'll definitely wait for a sale, too, Dolls4moi. I missed out on getting Sugar and still want her.

There are three others (besides Sugar) that I do not own. Ayako Jones and Coco (I wasn't feeling their outfits either, but now I wish I had purchased). I have no regrets over not purchasing Tano. I never could warm up to the bird cage in her hair.

  5. I read over on Fashion Dolls at Van's Doll Treasures that BarbieCollector.com is having a sale, the more you buy the more you save. Spend $50 and save $15. Get $25 off purchases that total $100. The sale ends 09/02/11.

  6. I am always in awe when designers can put things together that don't seem to belong and voila! I only have about 4 of the earlier Byron Lars dolls, but I love his work. How did he think to throw royal blue gloves in on this one. But it all works for me. $75 on sale. Not a bad price!

  7. Ok, I just saw the argyle socks. How did he ever come up with this concept and how did he pull it off? I just love this doll. No... I will not be buying her. I will be admiring her from afar. Remember I no longer buy dolls that just sit on shelves and I could never bring myself to redress her. That would defeat my whole purpose of buying her.

  8. Where's the Kente cloth? The description at BarbieCollector.com includes Kente cloth. I couldn't locate it. Her hair is short, cropped, but I'm not sure if it is straight or textured.

Yes, $75 is tempting, but I must hold off. As badly as I want the new Basics Barbie, I am holding off on ordering her and the accessory pack. I'm sure I will give in before the current sale ends on 09/02 and the doll with many names and many patterns in her fashion may be included in my order.
