Ornaments or Doll Clothes?

From a few feet away as they hung on a rack, I immediately saw doll clothes in these ornaments from Family Dollar. Once in my hands, I carefully examined each one checking for ample head, arm, and body openings. After determining they would work for petite dolls, I carted and purchased both.

Minor adjustments included cutting off the red ribbon ornament holders and slitting open the ribbon belt on the coat to create a complete opening. To increase the neck opening of the dress to accommodate a doll's head, I cut a V-shaped opening in the back at the neck.

I slit the coat's ribbon belt to the right of the yellow felt buckle as illustrated. (This caused some fraying).

I cut a V-shaped opening at the neck of the dress in the back to allow room to pull it over a doll's head. 

To prevent or stabilize the fraying of the coat's ribbon belt and the cut fur edges of the dress, I applied Mod Podge as illustrated next.

Mod Podge was painted on top and underneath the edge of the cut ribbon belt (it dried clear).

I applied Mod Podge to the cut edges of fur at the back of the dress neckline after I tried it on the doll selected to wear it and after I stuffed a wad of Saran wrap between the inside of the dress and the doll's body to protect it from the glue. I banded the doll's hair to protect it. 

After the glue dried, placing a small piece of double-sided tape underneath the belt reattached both belt pieces, and I removed the wad of Saran wrap from the back of the dress. Next, for one doll, I located black opaque stockings and a red cap, and shoes for both dolls to complete their Christmas attire. 

The dolls modeled their Christmas clothes individually and together.

Barbie Fashionista #93 on an articulated Blythe body wears the Mrs. Santa dress with black Blythe high-heel shoes.

These two look great in their 2024 Christmas outfits.

Creatable Dressing

The Creatable World doll from kit dc-319 is shown with the clothing, shoes, and accessories included in the kit.

As illustrated in the photos of this post, my dc-319 Creatable World doll enjoyed dressing and taking photos in the various ways the clothing, wig, and accessories in this kit can be mixed and matched.

We first tried on the below-shoulder-length loosely curled wig, which has a part that can be worn in the middle or to the side. Wearing it with the part on the side helps cover the vinyl band that is exposed at the front.

The silver lamé shorts are worn with the white jersey-knit tank/tee, white sneakers with green laces and purple soles, and sunglasses with purple lenses.

The orange zebra-graphic tee is worn with the pink and green camo skirt and yellow slip-ons that have a blue and yellow check upper. Colors are abundant in this look.

This is the same look as above with the wig added.

The tan bomber-style jacket was added to the orange tee and camo skirt combination. The wig was repositioned with the sunglasses resting on top of the doll's head.

The wig was removed and the skirt and sneakers replaced with light-blue acid-washed jeans and royal blue strappy sandals.

With sunglasses removed, the wig was added to the above look.

The acid-washed jeans are worn with a multicolored, striped button-down shirt; white high-top sneakers, and sunglasses resting on the head.

The sneakers have been changed to sandals with the wig and sunglasses again added.

The same clothes but different shoes, wearing sunglasses, and the wig styled into a ponytail changes the look.

The clothing and shoes are the same here. The wig has been replaced with a red knit cap.

In the next two pictures, the doll in this kit posed for a complexion comparison and fashion mixing with the doll and fashions from kit dc-725.

Their ebony and chocolate brown complexions complement each other.

They mixed and matched fashions from both kits. Matching was a bit challenging, however.

The ebony-complexion doll borrowed a cowboy hat, black-rimmed sunglasses, and striped T-shirt from the dc-725 kit. The dc-725 doll borrowed the wig, bomber jacket, and camo skirt from the other doll's kit.

Lastly, I thought about the smaller Christmas sweaters that I have purchased in the past and decided to see if these two could wear them. 

On the left, the camo jeans, red sneakers, and red hat are worn with a Christmas sweater from Christopher and Bank from 2015. On the right, a pink Christmas sweater from the same source is worn with this doll's camo skirt. The silver cowboy boots and sunglasses were borrowed from the other doll.

They posed with Santa in this final photo.

Santa and the dolls are part of my Christmas decor this year.

Creatable World dc-319

Creatable World Deluxe Character Kit dc-319 by Mattel

I found this ebony-complexioned Creatable World doll set for 50% off the original price and couldn't resist the temptation to buy it. I wrote a post about set dc-725 in September 2019 after purchasing it.

Including an image of this set, underneath the box flap are images of eight different Creatable World doll kits.

These 11-inch non-gender-specific doll kits include a variety of clothing, shoes, and accessories that can be mixed and matched with a claim by Mattel of 100+ looks. I have not dressed the doll in this set, but I will soon.

This doll has short black curly hair and an extra, long curly wig (shown next).

The wig has loose curls.

Like the dolls in the other kits, this doll wears a white jersey knit T-shirt and underwear.

Extra clothing and accessories include an orange T-shirt with a zebra on front and black-trimmed collar, camo skirt, tan bomber-style jacket, red knit cap, white sneakers with green laces and purple soles, yellow slip-on sneakers with black and yellow check uppers, royal blue strappy sandals, silver lamé biker shorts, sunglasses with purple lenses, acid-washed light blue jeans; and a multicolored striped, long-sleeved button-down shirt. 

Creatable World dolls have extra articulation at the elbows, wrists, knees, and ankles. After I have dressed this doll, I'll write a follow-up post. Creatable World Doll Review with Video Link

The Creatable World box 

Amazon shipped my Creatable World doll as shown, without a shipping box.  I had to gingerly peel off the address label from the front of the box cover, part of which covered the leg of the image of the doll.

Part of the tracking number remains on the back of the box cover as shown on the left in the yellow area.

An additional sticker with the tracking number and a larger one had to be removed from the back of the box cover.  I was able to remove the smaller sticker successfully, but the larger one was not able to be removed completely as shown in the above picture.  Glue residue remains on the front and back of the box cover where the stickers had been.

At checkout, the above option was available.  I did not choose "Ship in Amazon packaging" because I had no idea that by not doing so meant no packaging at all would be used. This is issue #1 with this doll; they did not use a shipping box!

The doll is packaged by Mattel in a beautifully designed box with a cover that slides off.  The two circular pieces of tape that were supposed to hold the cover to the inner box were folded over the edges of the inner box.  This leads me to believe I received a returned doll or that someone opened the box prior to my receipt of it.  This is issue #2.

Included inside the box is a poster with eight different ways the doll can be styled. The poster also illustrates five other Creatable World doll sets that were available at the time this set was released.

This photo was taken after the cellophane cover was removed from the inner box.  The doll and the accessories were neatly placed inside.  Nothing was strapped down.

At this point, I am still disappointed by the way Amazon shipped the doll, but I like what I see well enough to keep the doll.

She (that is my doll's gender identification) is able to sit nicely.  She is unable, however, to cross one leg over the other at the knee.

She is 11 inches tall and articulated in the usual five places as well as at the elbows, wrists, knees, and ankles.  The waist is not articulated.  The joints were a little stiff at first, but with gentle manipulation, I was able to move them with ease.  She struck this pose before I noticed something else.

The doll has a paint rub on one side of her head.  At first, I thought maybe it's supposed to be like this, but why, when the other side is not?  This is issue #3.

Since she was here, I decided to proceed with trying on the wig and a couple of the fashions before arranging a return to Amazon.

The braids are attached to a rigid vinyl wig cap.  With the wig on her head, sitting on top of the rooted patch of top hair, it looks exactly like she's wearing a hair cap.  I would have preferred a more flexible wig cap.  Had the braids extended to the front edge of the wig cap without leaving the rim visible, a more natural hairline would have been achieved.

The blue tutu is worn with the white undershirt she arrived wearing.  Silver cowboy boots and a cloth handbag were added to this look.

Going for even more of a Western look, she added a Stetson-style hat.

Next, she donned the red and white jacket that has faux leather sleeves with a pair of denim shorts and red high-top sneakers.  (Incidentally, all of this Creatable World doll's clothes have Velcro closures; nothing snaps or buttons.)

Her lightly tinted sunglasses were tried on, which is when I noticed issue #4.  Some of the black paint is flaking off the rim of the sunglasses.  I had already decided to send the doll back and this confirmed that I should.

I tried a few more pieces on her and she took more pictures before I returned her to the box and informed Amazon of these issues.  The additional and final photos are shown below:

The wig was tried on again.  This time some of her own hair served as bangs.

Unfazed by her flaws, she posed again in this photo and the next.

I really like the doll and the concept of multiple fashions and a wig.  Had she been issue free, she would be allowed to stay, but back she must go.

Creatable World Dolls by Mattel

Mattel has created a doll line, Creatable World, that allows children to explore doll play with nongender-specific dolls, clothing, and accessories.  According to the description, a child can create 100+ different looks with one character.  Some of the clothing features real snaps and pockets.

The dolls are 11 inches tall with extra articulation at the elbows, wrists, knees, and ankles.

Currently available on Amazon (see link below), there are several different dolls with different complexions priced at $29.99 each. 

Is it a boy, is it a girl, or is it whatever the child (or adult collector) wants it to be?
