Vitiligo Awareness Month

Vitiligo Awareness Month

June is Vitiligo Awareness Month and June 25th is Vitiligo Awareness Day. Dolls representing this skin condition which causes between 0.5% to 1% of the population to lose pigmentation are shown below:

Ndanaka is part of the Sibahle Collection.

A closeup of Ndanaka illustrates the extent of the vitiligo on the doll's face. Other affected areas are her arms, legs, and torso as illustrated here.

Barbie Fashionista #135 is flanked by two dolls my husband and I painted to represent people with vitiligo.

The repainted dolls were completed long before Mattel released Fashionista #135, but Mattel is to be applauded for including this doll in the Fashionista line.

Vitiligo is defined as:
  1. a condition in which the pigment is lost from areas of the skin, causing whitish patches, often with no clear cause.

That is what it is called.

Maylin's Return

Maylin by Paola Reina of Spain

Maylin was first introduced in my after-Christmas post about redressed and new dolls. In that post, there was only one picture of Maylin. I included the fact that she was a gift from a doll friend and a promise that I would take more pictures of her. Maylin returns today with those pictures.

Maylin has brown eyes with rooted upper eyelashes.

She wears a pretty (mostly) pink knit dress that has a beaded flower stitched to the bodice.

The beaded flower is better illustrated in this picture along with the drawstring pink ribbon at the waist.

Maylin's straight black rooted hair extends below the hem of her dress.

This profile photo illustrates the bow of the drawstring waist ribbon.

Here is an additional full-length photo of this 13-inch all-vinyl doll.

With her pretty pink dress, Maylin wears white socks and pink Mary-Jane-style shoes.

Photos with Cousins

Maylin has several cousins that were photographed with her.

Zuri and Ndanaka by Sibahle, which are also Paola Reina dolls, appear to be taller than Maylin, but it's all in the hair. They are all 13 inches tall. (Zuri represents someone with albinism while Ndanaka represents someone with vitiligo.)

A closeup with her Sibahle cousins

Chadwick (named by me) is her blue-eyed, brown-skinned cousin. They are about the same height.

Chadwick is also a Paola Reina doll.

Her younger cousins, Sarabi and Omar from Vestida de Azul's Carlota Collection were happy to take pictures with Maylin.

Closeup of the young cousins and Maylin; the younguns are 11 inches tall.

Maylin took two final photos with all her cousins.

The cousins from L-R are Ndanaka, Chadwick, Serabi, Maylin, Omar, and Zuri.

Their clothing and complexions create a burst of color!

Thank you again, BA, for the Maylin Christmas gift. Her cousins thank you, too!

Ndanaka a Doll With Vitiligo

Ndanaka is from the Rainbow Nation Sibahle Collection

Ndanaka is a 13-inch all-vinyl vanilla-scented doll that represents a person with vitiligo.  "Vitiligo is a disease that causes the loss of skin color in blotches. The extent and rate of color loss from vitiligo are unpredictable. It can affect the skin on any part of your body. It may also affect hair and the inside of the mouth. Normally, the color of hair and skin is determined by melanin." [Mayo Clinic]

Photos were taken with clothing removed to illustrate the areas of Ndanaka's pigment loss

Only one ear is affected.

After seeing the Kickstarter campaign for Ndanaka, I knew she was a must-have for me.  Ndanaka, which means "I am Beautiful " in Shona has brown stationary eyes with applied upper eyelashes and painted eyebrows.

Her 4C, densely rooted black hair is styled in a pulled up Afro puff which is accented with a hair band made from fabric that matches the colors of her peplum top (white, orange, brown, and turquoise animal print).  An orange tulle skirt, white undies, and pink shoes complete her arrival outfit.  Normally, Ndanaka is dressed in a buyer's choice of pink, yellow, or orange tutu dress that has a one-shoulder top.  When my order was placed, the company was out of the doll's standard clothing.  I was given an option of choosing the Rainbow Nation yellow, orange, or pink tutu dress.  As shown, I chose orange.

This animal print jumper fits Ndanaka well.
I also ordered an extra jumper made for the Rainbow Nation dolls.  Ndanaka models the jumper in the photo above.

Ndanaka's shoes are shown before and after they were painted white.

Because the pink shoes clash with the orange fashion, I painted Ndanaka's shoes white.

The white shoes are a better complement to her fashion.
Ndanaka's outfit and shoes are no longer clashing as illustrated above.

In this final photo, Ndanaka poses with her sister, Zuri, who represents a girl with albinism.  Across the board in all aspects of life, representation matters.  Dolls are no exception.  Everyone needs to see themselves in the dolls they play with and/or collect.  Ndanaka, Zuri and the other dolls under the Sibahle Collection brand address the need for dolls for everyone.

The Sibahle Collection of dolls can be seen under the Shop Dolls link of their website.

Sibahle Collection Kickstarter

Ndanaka is Sibahle Collections' next planned doll.  Photo from Instagram.

Sibahle Collection is a relatively new line of dolls.  Their mission is to bring dolls of color to the market for "girls to embrace their natural beauty" and "to encourage children of all races to embrace and celebrate diversity."  The line currently includes Black, Asian, mixed race dolls and a doll that represents albinism.

Sibahle Collection has a Kickstarter campaign that includes several doll rewards, one of which is Ndanaka, a doll that represents the condition of vitiligo.  Ndanaka means, "I am beautiful" in Shona.

By selecting Ndanaka and for a total pledge of approximately $53, which includes shipping, if the Kickstarter funding goal is met, Ndanaka will be the reward with expected delivery in March 2019.

Navigate to the Kickstarter, which ends on December 12, 2018, here.

For more information about Sibahle Collection visit their website or their Etsy Shop for other in-stock dolls and merchandise that can be purchased now.
