Memorial Day and Moment of Remembrance

Today in the United States, the last Monday in May 2011, we observe Memorial Day in remembrance and honor of military persons who served and died defending our country and its values.  We remember these heroes for their ultimate sacrifice.

Did you know that, in the year 2000, President Bill Clinton established a National Moment of  Remembrance?  He did this "encouraging individual [government] department and agency personnel, and Americans everywhere, to pause for one minute at 3:00 p.m. (local time) on Memorial Day, to remember and reflect on the sacrifices made by so many to provide freedom for all."

  1. Wish I had read this before 3pm. Thanks for the information. You have quite the GI Joe Collection there. I wouldn't mind having the Colin Powell and I wouldn't mind him being a little taller to properly fit into my collection.

  2. Hi Vanessa,

All of the action figures shown are 1:6 scale (12 inches). They're not the 4-inch ones or whatever height the smallest ones are.

  3. But even the 12" GI Joes are short. My DJ Rohan is 12" according to GI Joe. I have yet to meet a 12" GI Joe doll that is as tall as Barbie.

  4. That's interesting... don't make me have to debox one of my dolls for comparison. I see the makings of a future blog here
    :-)

  5. You don't even need to debox, just go back and look at my DJ Rohan post next to Christie. That is why my blogger friend, Dukasha, was so upset about the GI Joe men and wanting that company to make them taller. She was noticeably upset about it. I wish they were taller too.

  6. I read that post and noticed the size difference between Rohan and Halle. I thought perhaps that particular figure was smaller than others. I'll still do a comparison. A blog may not result but I need to know firsthand if all Hasbro's so-called 12-inch figures are not exactly 12 inches, and if this is the case, why not.

  7. I enjoyed seeing your GI Joe collection. I have the Tuskeegee Airmen and am very sorry that I didn't buy the Navaho Windtalker when I had the chance.

  8. Hi Limbe Dolls,

I'm glad you enjoyed the images. These were all used in past blog posts. I inadvertently or perhaps intentionally omitted the image of Hasbro's reproduction of the 1960s AA GI Joe with Kung Fu Grip, featured in a previous blog. I think I will use him for my GI Joe-Barbie height comparison since he is relatively easy to remove from the box.

I was unaware of the Navajo Windtalker GI Joe until now. Of course your post piqued my interest. I searched eBay and found a few listings for Navajo Joe with a reasonably priced, buy it now auction for one that includes two additional never-removed-from-box Joes. Check them out here if you're interested.

  9. Will this comparison take place today? I am very curious.

  10. I'm not sure. I'm sitting here with my hair wet from being shampooed over an hour ago before I sat down to compose the Philly Show recap blog, wrapped underneath a towel, needing to be combed before it gets dry and unmanageable. My plan for today was to attend my grandson's last day of school party, but since my daughter has not stopped by (the party begins at 9 a.m. CST), I guess I won't be doing that. After I tackle this head and get dressed, if I'm moved to do the comparison I will.

The party is from 9 to 11 so I may just go up to the school alone. I'm thinking my daughter must have stayed up there with him. I need Kodak moments for his pre-K last day of school... It's a granny thing. So if I do the comparison today, it will probably begin it around noon my time, 1 yours.

  11. You definitely need to do the Granny thing. That is important. Let's not talk about hair. I'm going 'natural' without meaning too. My hairdresser decided she no longer wants to do perms, so I've been left to my own vices, and that is not a good thing.

  12. I did do the granny thing but because (according to my brother) I suffer from CRS* syndrome, I forgot to bring my camera. I was only able to take one picture with my cell phone because my battery was low. Good grief. Aging is no joke.

I am very familiar with ponytails. I've been wearing my hair in one (my own hair) for about 8 months when I decided to let the perm grow off and go chemical free except for color every now and then (I don't like the Frederick Douglass gray temples look on me). I may have 1/4 inch of perm left on the ends which have been trimmed intermittently throughout this process to cut off most of the perm. In another three months I should be happy-nappy-free, but I'll probably still wear my ponytail.

    What are your plans?

  13. Bad Granny! Happy Nappy, isn't that an oxymoron? I love the natural style, but as soon as I get paid on Friday, I will be at Walmart buying my little perm and putting it in before the weekend ends. I go on a 4 day vacation next week and most of those people haven't seen me in 11 years. I want to spend my time visiting, not trying to make my hair look presentable. I am not skilled enough to make Nappy look good. If I could look like my Sylvia doll, I could be happy. I love her curly fro.

  14. I understand your dilemma.

I hope you enjoy your 4-day vacation.
