Updated: 40th Anniversary First Black Barbie

Designed by Bill Greening 40th Anniversary First Black Barbie uses the Model Muse Curvy body.
I purchased my 40th Anniversary First Black Barbie from Amazon on the morning of 02/01/2020.  Within a couple of hours, the dolls sold out!  Amazon will probably replenish stock soon.

As of this writing, the doll can be ordered from the Barbie website here.  There is a limit of two per person.   Target online also offers the doll here.

My doll arrived on the evening of 02/02/2020.  She is as gorgeous as expected as illustrated next.

I took close-ups of her face from different angles.  Her natural-textured hair is styled in an upswept Afro puff.

I love her full lips and the red lip color that coordinates with her shimmery red gown that is inspired by the first Black Barbie's dress.
She wears gold-tone wide hoop earrings and a gold collar necklace that is separate from her dress.  This doll reminds me of the late Kim Porter, actress, model, former girlfriend of Sean "whatever moniker he is going by now" Combs.
The 40th-anniversary doll posed with the first Black Barbie, whose gold neckline embellishment is attached to the top of her two-piece dress.
Photographed are the first Black Barbie (1980), the 2010 reproduction of the first Black Barbie, and the 40th Anniversary First Black Barbie (2020).
The first Black Barbie and the reproduction of that doll wear two-piece red dresses.  The 40th Anniversary doll wears a full-length red gown which has a thigh-high side split.  In addition to gold-tone earrings and a collar necklace, she holds a gold-tone clutch.  Red strappy high-heel shoes complete her look.  "She's Black, she's beautiful!"  In 1980, she was dynamite!  In 2020, she's an on-fire, unapologetically Black queen!

Updated for Complexion Comparison (Added 2/4/2020)

TL asked if 40th Anniversary First Black Barbie's complexion was comparable to Selma's, Puma Barbie, or S.I.S. Kara.  I do not own Selma or Puma.  I compared the doll to two S.I.S. dolls and the doll that I feel her complexion closely matches as illustrated below:

This photo is compromised by the camera's flash, but between the two S.I.S. dolls, 40th Anniversary Barbie's complexion is more compatible with Chandra's.  It is not an exact match, however.

BMR1959 Barbie #GHT94 is a better complexion match with the 40th Anniversary Barbie.

  4. She is absolutely gorgeous! I can’t wait to get one. Do you know whether she has the Selma skintone or the Puma/Kara skintone?

    1. I don't have Selma or Puma. She's probably slightly darker than Kara. I'll double-check tomorrow and let you know.

I am sure you will love her.

  5. I love her face, too. I often wonder how Amazon Prime is able to offer such speedy delivery, but I know they have warehouses of their own where products are stocked as well as affiliated merchants in most major cities.
