The President's Internal Fixation

The reader is referred to my previous post regarding my TrueType (Obama's) fractured arm where I decided to either turn the repair over to my husband or to secure the broken pieces with tape or a Band-Aid after my initial Super Glue fix did not work.

Immediately after publishing that post, I decided I did not want to put a Band-Aid on the problem.  I wanted a permanent fix.  I consulted my husband to get his opinion.  Doc Garrett's assessment and procedure are outlined below:

You'll need to remove the inner peg from both pieces and create a stent [rod] to hold the two pieces together.

He attempted to remove one peg with a corkscrew-looking device he had on his desk, which bent the device.

This will have to be heated in order to melt the plastic to create a hole large enough to insert a wooden or plastic rod.  This might work better (handing me a metal math compass for me to do it).

I took the compass into the kitchen, heated the pointed tip on a burner, and attempted to create a hole in the inner section of the upper arm.  Doc arrived in the kitchen to observe my failed attempt.  "It bent."  I said.

Doc:  You didn't get it hot enough.  (Takes it from me.)

He successfully melted the inner areas of the upper and mid-sections of the arm and bored out the plastic pegs from both.  Meanwhile, I searched the kitchen for a rod-like device.  He picked up one of my wooden paint brushes and said, "It needs to be something like this that will fit the holes."

Holes created in upper and mid arm joints using a heated metal compass tip

Rod created using a plastic paint brush

Not wanting to use one of my good brushes, I retrieved a yellow plastic bristle/plastic handled paint brush to use as the internal fixation device.  A section of the lower end of the brush handle fit perfectly after Doc trimmed off the bristles.   The trimmed end was super glued and allowed to dry but the procedure had to be modified.  The paint brush would not remain securely in place inside this hollow section of the upper arm.

Another piece of the yellow handle was trimmed to fit the hole in the mid-arm where it was secured with cement glue and allowed to dry for 24 hours.

Next, Doc trimmed off the excess rod that was glued to the mid-section of the arm.

After trimming, this is how the internal fixation device (rod) looked before inserting into the upper arm.

The mid-section is now connected to the upper section and the lower arm is screwed into the mid-section as it was before the injury. .
Shirt, jacket, and tie are back on along with the hands.

With my husband's assistance, the President has recovered nicely from his injury and is almost as good as new.

Broken President

Because he is did not mind sharing, my TrueType (President Obama) figure shared his suit jacket this past February with So In Style Darren, who can be seen here wearing it in place of the pink jacket that came with the "suit" Darren wore to celebrate Valentine's Day with Trichelle.

SIS Darren redressed in Ken's 1970s Playing it Cool fashion

Darren has since undergone another redress as part of a September SIS Group redressing event that I participated in.  In this event, Darren (as shown above) goes retro in Ken's 1970 Play It Cool fashion #1433. He holds the September 1970 copy of Ebony magazine featuring the Jackson 5 on the cover.  His hair is a removable Afro wig courtesy of Limbe Dolls.

In the meantime (since February), the jacket Darren borrowed from my TrueType figure was left lying on top of a box in the doll room.   Yesterday, I decided to place it back on the President.  In doing so, I twisted one of his arms causing it to break at the joint!  [Insert expletive of your choice here].

TrueType (Obama) with broken arm -- hand was intentionally removed in order to remove this shirt sleeve for the attempted repair.

I tried to re-glue the arm with Super Glue.  It was held together with packaging tape overnight after the glue was applied.  This morning I removed the tape. Unfortunately, the glue did not hold.  I may have to turn this repair over to my husband or just reattach the upper and lower arm pieces with tape (or a Band-Aid) and allow his long-sleeved shirt and jacket to cover it.

Don't you just hate it when stuff like this happens?

Concealing the President's Boo-Boo

The location where he is positioned is not secret service-secure to protect him from those who bustle into my doll room without regard to the dolls positioned at the entrance atop boxed dolls.  He also was not supported by a doll stand.  As a result, my TrueType African American figure molded in the likeness of President Obama has fallen or been knocked down on numerous occasions.

His last fall occurred several weeks ago causing a paint scrape to his forehead.  "Dang,"  I thought... "that daughter of mine!"  But who knew these figures were painted and such injuries would occur with a simple fall onto a carpeted floor?  "Oh well... I'll fix him soon," I thought again.

Finally I did.  To avoid mixing paint to match his manufactured, painted complexion, I used a combination of face powder and concealers.  I applied the concealers first and sealed with powdered make-up using a make-up sponge.

Here he is now, supported on a doll stand, almost as good as new.

Question: Can TrueType Obama's head fit Ken's?

Answer: No. TrueType's head is too small. In fact, it's almost too small for the TrueType body.

The Man in the Blue Suit

I ordered this blue suit from an eBay seller for my TrueType Obama figure.  It included shirt, tie, socks and shoes. The quality is nice (even though the shirt and pants have Velcro closure). There are no loose or dangling threads, missed stitches, or other irregularities that I could find.

The coat is lined.  The pants and shirt wear well without it. The nylon black socks fit his feet and the shoes were easy to put on without unlacing. I prefer leather (or believable pleather) shoes over the patent-leather (PL) ones that came with the suit because PL shoes on men just don't work for me.

I've given the seller positive feedback.

"The man" is joined by his First Lady, who now wears her original little black dress with the addition of a scarf to mask the plunging neckline.

TrueType "Obama" Meets #10

I restyled the above doll's hair, the actual length of which is below her waist.  Next, I redressed her in several casual fashions, and paired her with my TrueType African American (Obama) action figure.  In the above photo, the mystery doll is wearing Alexis's (LIV) top and jeans (minus the sweater) and Artsy's (Fashionistas) shoulder bag and boots.

Barbie Basics Collection 001, Model 10 is the mystery doll.

Artsy's trendy boots and shoulder bag were exchanged for Alexis's more conservative boots and handbag.

Next,  she tried on Barbie's denim jacket with pink faux fur trim and pink corduroy pants.  She's wearing boots from another Barbie fashion.

For now she has settled on wearing yet another Barbie fashion: multicolored top, denim capris, and brown heels.  This outfit came with a flower watering can, not shown.

Which casual outfit do you think the First Lady would wear?
