First Look at A Wrinkle in Time Barbies

Internet-captured photo from an Ava Duvernay tweet (see tweet below) of Barbies made in the likeness of A Wrinkle in Time movie characters, Mrs Who (Mindy Kaling), Mrs Which (Oprah Winfrey), and Mrs Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon).

On January 25, 2018, Ava Duvernay, the director of A Wrinkle in Time, tweeted:

The dolls are designed by Carlyle Nuera, Senior Designer - Barbie Signature Label, who shared the same photo in a Facebook status update on January 25, 2018, and wrote:

The three Mrs of @wrinkleintime are here! This was suuuuuch a fun project to work on, high key one of my favorites of my entire Barbie design career. To be the designer of these Barbies and recreate these amazing costumes by #pacodelgado and hairstyles by @kimblehaircare was an honor. I even got to visit the set in LA, see the costumes in person and meet @ava πŸ˜±. And working with the Disney Team has been fantastic, a true partnership. And of course, the Mattel ‘atelier’ of highly skilled sculptors (all three Barbies are sculpted in the likenesses of @oprah, @mindykaling and @reesewitherspoon!!), face paint designers, hair designers, soft goods engineers, pattern makers, and more, always kill it!
I can’t wait for this movie. It’s going to be epic. #beawarrior πŸ’₯
A Wrinkle is Time is the film adaptation of the 1962 children's book of the same name, written by Madeleine L'Engle.  In the movie, three interesting characters help Meg, her brother, and a school friend, find Meg's scientist father who had disappeared into space.  It is scheduled for theater release on March 9, 2018, (which happens to be Barbie's birthday; she'll be 59 this year!).  Watch the trailer here or below.

The Oprah doll (Mrs Which) has been added to my Doll Genie Magic Carpet Club wish list (I will be notified when the doll is in stock).  I hope Mattel or someone will also manufacture a Skipper-sized doll in the likeness of Storm Reid, who plays Meg Murry.

  1. They really need to do a Meg doll, she is the main character.

  2. :-) Too funny about wanting her now! I'd have to hop off this hiatus if she were available now... but I did place her on my wish list at Doll Genie. When I checked their website the doll is no longer shown with the list of dolls. I hope this just means the store's allotment has been spoken for and my doll is already reserved for me.

I didn't read the Twitter thread. People are funny.

General Public Service Announcement: Even though you're an adult, you do not need permission to love, buy, collect dolls. It's okay. Dolls are not just playthings for children.

    Sigh.

Yes, I know people are already making plans to customize the Oprah doll. I'll sit back and enjoy the photos that will be shared. My doll will remain as is.

  3. These dolls are awesome! You would think as a Platinum Member of Barbie Collectors, that we would get an opportunity to purchase these before they hit the mainstream market (This is what they promise you when you join after all!) So far, I have not seen any real advantage to being a Platinum member. I saw a post on Facebook that these were already available for purchase at Amazon.com Chez republic! Lately, many of the new releases are available internationally long before we see them here. The Curvy MTM doll is an example.

    1. I didn't even think to check Amazon, Phyllis. If they're there, we might experience the same difficultly with purchasing the Ava Durvernay Barbie -- Mattel doling out just a few at a time to Amazon. I need to check with Doll Genie to see if they are actually going to have the dolls.

Why Mattel releases dolls to other markets first or allows them to be sold by other merchants like Amazon before they are sold in the US, on their website, or as you've indicated to Platinum members is asinine. They should always take care of loyal customers and "home" first.

  4. Thanks, DBG, for sharing! News to me - and I read the books. The dolls look striking. Trying to remember what the characters looked like in the books. Might have to re-read. ;-)

  5. You're welcome, D7ana. I never read the books, but I would imagine the book characters looked nothing like the multicultural movie characters.

  6. These dolls look absolutely amazing. So colorful and unique and I can't wait to see more photos of them. I also hope they make a Storm Reid doll...she's a gorgeous girl!

  7. I can't wait to see the movie after seeing the trailer, and I don't normally do Disney movies. I'll have to go ahead and get the Oprah doll. She'll most likely remain in her box.

    1. I'll wait for the DVD. :-)

I will order the Oprah doll on February 1st when my doll-buying hiatus ends (but my doll buying will still be curtailed) indefinitely.
